Reheating in models with non-minimal coupling in metric and Palatini formalisms

Dhong Yeon Cheong et al.

Summary: We study the reheating of inflationary models with general non-minimal coupling and provide general analytic expressions for cosmological observables. By considering a wide range of nonminimal coupling and different formalisms, we derive predictions for cosmological observables and the reheating temperature with respect to a general equation of state parameter.

Ultraviolet behaviour of Higgs inflation models (vol 2021, 18, 2021)

Ignatios Antoniadis et al.

Summary: This article is an addendum to [1], extending the computation of onshell scattering amplitudes in an arbitrary inflaton background. The results show that in the U(1) model, as well as the realistic doublet Higgs model, there are differences in the effective Einstein frame cutoff, but the background (phi) over bar (1) serves as the effective Jordan frame cutoff in all cases.

The inflaton that could: primordial black holes and second order gravitational waves from tachyonic instability induced in Higgs-R2 inflation

Summary: This paper introduces the effects of the running of the Higgs self coupling on early universe cosmology, particularly the phenomena of primordial black holes and stochastic gravitational waves. These phenomena can be further studied using proposed gravitational wave observatories.

Axion quality problem alleviated by nonminimal coupling to gravity

Koichi Hamaguchi et al.

Summary: Global symmetries are expected to be violated by gravity, but a new coupling method can suppress the breaking effect in the presence of gravity, maintaining high-quality symmetry. This provides a new way to avoid the mass problem of global symmetries.

The axion quality problem: global symmetry breaking and wormholes

James Alvey et al.

Summary: Continuous global symmetries may be broken by gravity, posing a threat to certain solutions like the Peccei-Quinn solution to the strong CP problem. Wormholes as a source of gravity-induced global symmetry breaking have important implications for the quality of axions, particularly in non-perturbative Einstein gravity and open String Theory.

Symmetries in Quantum Field Theory and Quantum Gravity

Daniel Harlow et al.

Summary: This paper refines and establishes a set of old conjectures about symmetries in quantum gravity using the AdS/CFT correspondence. It shows the absence of bulk global symmetries in AdS/CFT and discusses how long-range bulk gauge symmetries lead to global boundary symmetries. The results are extended to higher-form symmetries and the weak gravity conjecture is applied to more general gauge groups.

Ultraviolet behaviour of Higgs inflation models

Ignatios Antoniadis et al.

Summary: In this study, we investigate the ultraviolet behavior of Higgs inflation models above the apparent unitarity violation scale caused by the large non minimal coupling to gravity. By computing on-shell 4-point scattering amplitudes in the presence of a large inflaton background, we find that all tree-level amplitudes behave well at high energies below the inflaton background. This result holds true in both the metric and Palatini formulation, regardless of the frame used (Jordan or Einstein), and remains consistent even when an R-2 term is added to the action.

Preheating from target space curvature and unitarity violation: Analysis in field space

Yohei Ema et al.

Summary: The study focuses on particle production and unitarity violation caused by a curved target space right after inflation. A semiclassical formula for the spectrum of produced particles is derived using the inflaton field value as the time variable, along with a simple condition for unitarity violation during preheating. The conservation of unitarity during inflation is shown to depend on both the target space curvature and the height of the inflaton potential at the end of inflation.
