Role of artificial intelligence on green economic development: Joint determinates of natural resources and green total factor productivity

Lei Chang et al.

Summary: The shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy in the energy consumption structure raises the need to investigate the actual impact of reducing energy use on green total factor productivity (GTFP) and how to reconcile the relationship between energy consumption reduction and GTFP through technical approaches. This study proposes the bidirectional influence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the natural resources market on GTFP. It comprehensively evaluates the effects of AI on green economic development using China as a case study and a relevant mathematical model. The study finds that the impacts of AI on carbon intensity vary across industries and developmental phases. AI has significantly reduced carbon intensity during the 12th Five-Year Plan compared to the 11th. Labor- and technology-intensive industries are likely to experience a more substantial drop in carbon intensity due to AI and the natural resources market compared to capital-intensive businesses.

Impact of population agglomeration in big cities on carbon emissions

Yanchun Yi et al.

Summary: This study examined the influencing mechanism of population agglomeration in large cities on carbon emissions, including technological innovation, industrial structure, and transportation effects. Additionally, the study aimed to explore the nonlinear impact of population agglomeration on carbon emissions. Panel data from 207 big cities with a population of over 1 million permanent residents were used to investigate the relationship between population agglomeration and carbon emissions. The findings revealed that population agglomeration in big cities significantly increased urban carbon emissions. Mechanism analysis showed that population agglomeration influenced carbon emissions through the channels of industrial structure and transportation effects. Technological innovation had a reducing effect on carbon emissions but did not fully offset the growth caused by industrial structure and transportation effects. Nonlinear estimation results indicated that the impact of population agglomeration on carbon emissions varied among big cities with different population levels.

Impact of urban density on carbon emissions in China

Yanchun Yi et al.

Summary: The study found a significant negative correlation between urban density and carbon emissions, showing that increasing urban density can lead to a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions. However, the impact of urban density on carbon emissions varied depending on the city's population size. Medium-sized cities experienced the greatest reduction in carbon emissions with increased urban density, followed by large cities with populations of less than 5 million. Megacities with populations exceeding 5 million did not see a significant reduction in carbon emissions from urban density. These findings support the idea of building compact cities and provide decision support for China's urbanization efforts in creating a 'beautiful China'.
