Clinical consensus document for fitting non-surgical transcutaneous bone conduction hearing devices to children

Marlene Bagatto et al.

Summary: This clinical consensus document addresses the assessment, selection, and fitting considerations for non-surgical bone conduction hearing devices (BCHD) for children under the age of 5 years identified as having unilateral or bilateral, permanent conductive or mixed hearing losses. Developed by The Paediatric Bone Conduction Working Group, the document provides clinical direction for an area of paediatric audiology practice lacking in standard protocols or guidelines, potentially serving as a basis for future research and clinical contributions.

Cortical imbalance following delayed restoration of bilateral hearing in deaf adolescents

Carly A. Anderson et al.

Summary: Unilateral auditory deprivation in early childhood can lead to cortical strengthening of inputs from the stimulated side, yet the impact of this on bilateral processing when inputs are later restored beyond an early sensitive period is unknown. In a study with bilaterally profoundly deaf adolescents, it was found that duration of unilateral deafness predicted a stronger representation of inputs from the newly implanted ear in the left auditory cortex. However, deficits in ipsilateral response inhibition of new inputs during bilateral processing resulted in reduced bilateral response enhancement in the left auditory cortex.

Benefits of Cochlear Implantation in Childhood Unilateral Hearing Loss (CUHL Trial)

Kevin D. Brown et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates significant benefits of cochlear implantation in children with unilateral sensory hearing loss, including improvements in speech perception in quiet and noise, sound localization, and subjective hearing qualities. These findings suggest that cochlear implantation can effectively improve hearing outcomes in children with unilateral sensory hearing loss.

Functional Reorganization of the Central Auditory System in Children with Single-Sided Deafness: A Protocol Using fNIRS

Marie-Noelle Calmels et al.

Summary: This research protocol utilizes fNIRS to analyze cortical changes in children with single-sided deafness and their relationship with auditory and language skills, providing important insights for developing individualized rehabilitation programs for untreated SSD children. By comparing cortical measures between SSD and normal hearing children and studying their association with binaural hearing, speech perception and production, and quality of life, the study aims to prevent long-term neurofunctional and clinical consequences.

Cochlear Implantation in Children with Single-Sided Deafness

Nicholas L. Deep et al.

Summary: This study reviewed the experience of 14 pediatric patients under 18 years old who underwent unilateral cochlear implantation for single-sided deafness. The results suggest that cochlear implantation is a viable treatment option for pediatric patients with SSD, leading to improved speech perception and background noise control.

Validation of a Parent ProxyQuality-of-LifeMeasure for Young Children With Hearing Loss

Cathy Y. Yu et al.

Summary: A new parent-proxy Preschool Hearing Environments and Reflection on Quality of Life (HEAR-QL) questionnaire was developed and evaluated for children 2 to 6 years old with any hearing loss. The questionnaire was reduced to 23 items with five underlying factors: Behavior and Attention, Hearing Environments, New Social Situations, Social Interactions, and Communication. The study found moderate-to-strong correlations between each Preschool HEAR-QL factor and previously validated measures, supporting its construct validity. Discriminant validity testing requires a larger sample of children with normal hearing.

Long-term results of cochlear implantation in children with congenital single-sided deafness

Ann-Kathrin Rauch et al.

Summary: The study found that children with congenital SSD who undergo CI surgery before 3 years old show significant long-term improvement in speech discrimination and subjective benefit. However, children over 4 years old at the time of CI surgery only partially improve in audiological/subjective measurements. In children above 5 years old, the SSQ score does not improve despite slight improvement in speech discrimination long-term.

Likelihood-based inference for generalized linear mixed models: Inference with the R package glmm

Christina Knudson et al.

Summary: The R package glmm is a tool for likelihood-based inference for generalized linear mixed models, using importance sampling to approximate the likelihood function and derivatives. It is particularly effective for models with crossed random effects. The package is designed to tailor the importance sampling distribution based on the data, ensuring accurate inference with finite Monte Carlo standard errors.

Spatial Hearing and Functional Auditory Skills in Children With Unilateral Hearing Loss

Nicole E. Corbin et al.

Summary: Children with longstanding unilateral hearing loss (UHL) exhibit poorer sound source localization and masked speech recognition in spatially separated conditions, especially with a two-talker speech masker. Parents' report suggests that spatial hearing plays a crucial role in outcomes for children with UHL.

Ear-Specific Hemispheric Asymmetry in Unilateral Deafness Revealed by Auditory Cortical Activity

Ji-Hye Han et al.

Summary: Profound unilateral deafness leads to changes in cortical processing and reorganization in the whole brain. Differences in hemispheric asymmetry and behavioral performance during spatial cue detection were observed between right-sided and left-sided unilateral deafness. Right-sided unilateral deafness showed adaptive cortical reorganization and delayed reaction time in sound localization tasks, indicating a greater capability for adaptive change compared to left-sided unilateral deafness.
