Influential mechanism of water occurrence states of waste-activated sludge: Potential linkage between water-holding capacity and molecular compositions of EPS

Summary: This study focuses on the variation in molecular compositions of EPS induced by •OH and its effects on the water occurrence states of waste-activated sludge (WAS). The results indicate that hydrophilic functional groups have a greater impact on the water-holding capacity of EPS. It is clarified that selectively removing hydrophilic functional groups is more effective for highly-efficient sludge conditioning approaches than improving •OH production efficiency.

Single step calcium sulfate scale removal at high temperature using tetrapotassium ethylenediaminetetraacetate with potassium carbonate

Summary: Calcium sulfate scale is a common problem in oil and gas wells and water injectors. This study successfully removed the scale using a single-step method with potassium carbonate and tetrapotassium ethylenediaminetetraacetate at high temperature. The parameters for optimal dissolution efficiency were identified, and the reaction product was found to be non-corrosive with high stability and minimal corrosion rates at high temperatures.

Deciphering the impacts of composition of extracellular polymeric substances on sludge dewaterability: An often overlooked role of amino acids

Summary: The study found that glycine, serine, and threonine are key amino acids correlated with parameters related to sludge dewaterability. Adding these amino acids to sludge samples deteriorated sludge dewaterability due to high repulsive hydrophilic interaction. The presence of these amino acids led to a predominance of Lewis acid-base interaction among sludge flocs.
