Estimating Entropy Production from Waiting Time Distributions

Summary: This research focuses on the operation and energy consumption of living systems in non-equilibrium states, proposing a method using hidden Markov process waiting time statistics to bound entropy production. By inferring entropy production bounds from experimental data for gene regulatory networks, mammalian behavioral dynamics, and other biological processes, the necessary entropic cost of heartbeat regulation in humans, dogs, and mice is estimated.
