Joint Use of Guard Capacity and Multiconnectivity for Improved Session Continuity in Millimeter-Wave 5G NR Systems

Vyacheslav Begishev et al.

Summary: This study combines queuing theory and stochastic geometry tools to develop a mathematical framework for capturing the joint operation of multiconnectivity and guard capacity mechanisms to improve the intermittent nature of mmWave links caused by human-body blockage in 5G NR technology. Results show that multiconnectivity benefits system performance, but its range of performance boost is limited by deployment density and the maximum supported degree of multiconnectivity. Guard capacity further decreases ongoing session drop probability at the expense of new session drop probability and system resource utilization without noticeable negative effects when implemented jointly with multiconnectivity.

Performance Analysis of Multi-Band Microwave and Millimeter-Wave Operation in 5G NR Systems

Vyacheslav Begishev et al.

Summary: This study develops a mathematical framework using stochastic geometry and queuing theory, utilizing 3GPP cluster-based propagation modeling to capture session-level service dynamics of user equipment that supports multi-band operation. The results show that serving mmWave sessions with microwave BSs is feasible in light traffic conditions, but there are challenges to be aware of.
