Hydrological and Hydrodynamic Modeling for Flash Flood and Embankment Dam Break Scenario: Hazard Mapping of Extreme Storm Events

A'kif Al-Fugara et al.

Summary: The study aimed to identify flood-prone areas in the Al Wala Valley by simulating dam breach scenarios. Two scenarios, Clear Day and Probable Maximum Flood, were simulated to study the failure modes and flood potential. The results showed that both scenarios resulted in significant flooding, but the Probable Maximum Flood scenario led to larger flooded areas.

Risk Assessment and Mapping of Flash Flood Vulnerable Zones in Arid Region, Fujairah City, UAE-Using Remote Sensing and GIS-Based Analysis

P. Subraelu et al.

Summary: A flash flood is a common natural hazard that poses threats to people's lives, economy, and infrastructure. Effective watershed management and planning are crucial to minimize flood damages, particularly in residential areas and by mapping flash flood-sensitive zones. Flash floods are influenced by various factors such as geology, geomorphology, soil, drainage density, slope, and flood, rather than solely water movement. Therefore, it is important to be aware of and map topographical features to assess the vulnerability to flash floods. This study used satellite images and geographic information systems (GIS) to predict flash flood-vulnerable zones by combining factors like rainfall, elevation, slope, land use/land cover (LULC), drainage density, geology, geomorphology, and soil. The findings can aid in comprehensive flash flood risk assessment and management, and the results have identified highly vulnerable areas such as airports, ports, residential neighborhoods, oil storage areas, hospitals, and universities. Furthermore, consistent changes in vegetation and built-up areas were observed, providing valuable information for policy and decision-makers.

Deduction of sudden rainstorm scenarios: integrating decision makers' emotions, dynamic Bayesian network and DS evidence theory

Xiaoliang Xie et al.

Summary: This study integrates dynamic Bayesian networks, evidence theory, and emotion update mechanisms to propose an efficient and effective scenario deduction model for sudden disasters. The model effectively simulates the dynamic change process of scenario deduction and provides targeted emergency management measures.

Experimental Study on Failure Model of Tailing Dam Overtopping under Heavy Rainfall

Guangjin Wang et al.

Summary: Unusual rainfall is the main cause of tailing dam failure. In this study, the process of breach extension and the overtopping dam-failure mechanism of an upstream tailing dam under full-scale rainfall conditions were investigated. The results showed that the height of the infiltration line at different positions of the dam body varied with the rainfall duration. The process of overtopping dam-failure involved gully erosion, formation of a multistepped small scarp, breach rapid expansion, formation of large scarp, and burst. The width and depth of the breach were positively correlated, with the widening rate being higher than the deepening rate.
