Understanding Alkali Contamination in Colloidal Nanomaterials to Unlock Grain Boundary Impurity Engineering

Se-Ho Kim et al.

Summary: Metal nanogels possess a large surface area, high structural stability, and high catalytic activity, which are determined by the atomic-level distribution of their constituents. However, analyzing their subnanoscale structure and composition for property optimization is challenging. In this study, Pd nanogels were synthesized and an analysis revealed that impurities from the reactants integrated into the grain boundaries, which are typically sites of high catalytic activity. The level of impurities was found to be controlled by the reaction conditions, offering opportunities for designing new nanogels.

Controlled Doping of Electrocatalysts through Engineering Impurities

Se-Ho Kim et al.

Summary: Fuel cells can power cars or houses with no direct carbon emissions by recombining water from H-2 and O-2. Anion-exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs) achieve high power densities by operating at high pH instead of using large volumes of noble metal catalysts. However, the slow kinetics of the hydrogen-oxidation reaction (HOR) limits scaling up.

Insights into the performance and degradation of Ru@Pt core-shell catalysts for fuel cells by advanced (scanning) transmission electron microscopy

Alba Garzon Manjon et al.

Summary: In this study, the degradation of Ru@Pt nanoparticles under fuel cell conditions was investigated. Results showed that Ru@1Pt exhibited superior initial electrochemical performance, while Ru@2Pt demonstrated higher stability during accelerated stress tests. The coverage of the Ru cores provided insights into maximizing the initial performance of Ru@Pt-type catalysts without compromising their stability under fuel cell conditions.

Evaluation of functional layers thinning of high temperature polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells after long term operation

Miquel Vega Paredes et al.

Summary: This study investigates the degradation processes of high temperature polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell operated with hydrogen-rich reformate gas. It is found that CO impurities strongly adsorb to the catalyst surface, leading to performance reduction. Analysis using microscopy and spectroscopy reveals thinning of functional layers and redistribution of catalyst material. These findings provide guidance for the design and development of fuel cells with higher performance.

'Beneficial impurities' in colloidal synthesis of surfactant coated inorganic nanoparticles

Ran Eitan Abutbul et al.

Summary: Colloidal synthesis of nanoparticles has made significant advancements in the past 25 years, introducing nanomaterials with diverse compositions, shapes, sizes, and phases. However, reproducibility issues are common due to the effects of impurities, which are often overlooked despite their significant impact on reaction products. This topical review discusses case studies highlighting the sources and chemistry of impurities in colloidal nanoparticle synthesis.
