Hydropower, human capital, urbanization and ecological footprints nexus in China and Brazil: evidence from quantile ARDL

Aviral Kumar Tiwari et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the relationships among ecological footprints, biocapacity per capita, gross domestic product per capita, natural resources, urbanization, human capital, and hydroelectric consumption for Brazil and China from 1971Q1 to 2017Q4. The novel quantile autoregressive distributive lag method is used to analyze the long-run and short-run dynamics of environmental degradation. The findings reveal that economic growth plays a positive role in the environmental degradation of both countries, but human capital, natural resources, and hydropower have heterogeneous effects across quantile distribution and between the two countries. Based on the quantile dynamics of environmental degradation, this study suggests policy implications for sustainable development.

The impact of renewable energy, internet use and foreign direct investment on carbon dioxide emissions: A method of moments quantile analysis

Ashar Awan et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the relationship among economic growth, environmental degradation, and various factors such as foreign direct investment, urbanization, renewable energy, and information communication technology. The findings reveal an inverted U-shape relationship between economic growth and environmental degradation, supporting the validity of the Environmental Kuznets Curve. Foreign direct investment has a positive impact on economic growth at lower quantiles but becomes insignificant at higher quantiles. Urbanization promotes environmental degradation, while renewable energy mitigates carbon dioxide emissions. Information communication technology, represented by internet usage, significantly reduces environmental degradation.

Do energy consumption, urbanization, and industrialization play a role in environmental degradation in the case of Saudi Arabia?

Bassem Kahouli et al.

Summary: This study empirically explores the relationship between energy consumption, environmental degradation, trade, industrialization, urbanization, and economic growth in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia from 1971 to 2019. The findings indicate that an increase in energy consumption and environmental degradation promotes economic growth, but energy consumption also contributes significantly to environmental deterioration. Additionally, there is a long-term feedback effect among the different variables. In the short term, energy use, trade, and urbanization have a Granger-causal relationship with economic growth, while economic growth, environment, industrialization, and urbanization Granger-cause energy consumption. Saudi policymakers should consider the leading role of trade, urbanization, and industrialization in improving economic growth and harming environmental quality and implement efficient energy policies.

Summary: This investigation examines the relationship between clean energy consumption, GDP, trade openness, urbanization, and CO2 emissions in the G7 economies from 1979 to 2019. It finds evidence of the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) in the long run, indicating that increasing clean energy consumption can reduce CO2 emissions. Additionally, the results indicate that trade openness leads to increased CO2 emissions, while urbanization decreases CO2 emissions. The study emphasizes the importance of utilizing nuclear energy, hydropower, and renewables to improve sustainable energy production and environmental quality.

Summary: Energy and green innovation are crucial for economic progress, but the negative impacts of increased pollution cannot be ignored. This study empirically examines the effects of environment-related technologies, coal consumption, economic growth, and population density on consumption-based CO2 emissions in the BRICS countries. The results show that environment-related technologies have a negative impact on CO2 emissions, while per capita GDP and coal consumption have a positive impact. Therefore, encouraging the use of environment-related technologies to reduce CO2 emissions is important for the long-term sustainability of BRICS countries.
