Assessment of the allelochemical activity of Ostreopsis cf. ovata and the ovatoxins towards competitive benthic microalgae

Eva Ternon et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of the toxic dinoflagellate Ostreopsis cf. ovata on co-occurring microalgal species through in vitro experiments. The results showed that O. cf. ovata exhibited weak allelopathic effects on the growth of the microalgal species, but its mucus layer could accumulate the potent ovatoxins and negatively affect the growth of the microalgae.

First Characterization of Ostreopsis cf. ovata (Dinophyceae) and Detection of Ovatoxins during a Multispecific and Toxic Ostreopsis Bloom on French Atlantic Coast

Nicolas Chomerat et al.

Summary: Blooms of the benthic toxic dinoflagellate genus Ostreopsis have been increasing in frequency in warm temperate areas such as the Mediterranean Sea. These blooms can have deleterious effects on ecosystems and impact human health. A recent investigation on the French Basque coast found the presence of new health risks due to the blooms of Ostreopsis species, possibly related to climate change.

Environmental, human health and socioeconomic impacts of Ostreopsis spp. Blooms in the NW Mediterranean

Elisa Berdalet et al.

Summary: This paper summarizes the research conducted by the partners of the EU co-funded CoCliME project on the impacts of Ostreopsis blooms in the NW Mediterranean coasts, with a focus on ecological, human health and economic aspects. The findings provide valuable knowledge for designing strategies to prevent, mitigate and adapt to these events.

Palytoxin-Analogues Accumulation in Natural Mussel Banks during an Ostreopsis cf. ovata Bloom

Stefano Accoroni et al.

Summary: The bioaccumulation of OVTX toxins in mussels was found to be correlated with the abundance of Ostreopsis during blooms. The study suggests that the Italian guidelines for managing Ostreopsis blooms are effective in preventing human intoxication through mussel contamination.
