Cardio-Oncology Drug Interactions: A Scientific Statement From the American Heart Association

Craig J. Beavers et al.

Summary: In the population of cardio-oncology, drug interactions play a significant role due to the complexity of drugs and potential risks. It is important for clinicians to recognize potential drug-drug interactions to minimize risks in cardiovascular or cancer therapies. This scientific statement provides an overview of pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic drug interactions for clinicians treating cancer patients exposed to common cardiovascular and cancer medications.

Validation of Embolic and Bleeding Risk Scores in Patients With Atrial Fibrillation and Cancer

Sergio Raposeiras-Roubin et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the predictive ability of CHA(2)DS(2)-VASc and HAS-BLED scores in patients with AF and cancer. It found that in patients with cancer not receiving anticoagulation therapy, the CHA(2)DS(2)-VASc score had poor predictive ability compared to those without cancer, while the HAS-BLED score performed similarly in patients with and without cancer.

Summary: The study evaluated the safety of catheter ablation for non-valvular atrial fibrillation in cancer survivors. Results showed that clinically relevant bleeding was more frequent in cancer survivors compared to patients without cancer. Further studies are needed to confirm these findings.

Summary: Every year, the American Cancer Society projects the numbers of new cancer cases and deaths in the United States, with the latest data showing a significant decline in lung cancer mortality, while prostate cancer mortality has plateaued and breast and colorectal cancer mortality have slowed. Improvements in treatment have accelerated progress against lung cancer, leading to a record drop in overall cancer mortality.

Cumulative burden of metabolic syndrome and its components on the risk of atrial fibrillation: a nationwide population-based study

Hyo-Jeong Ahn et al.

Summary: The study found a positive correlation between the cumulative burden of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and the development of atrial fibrillation (AF). Not only did an increased number of MetS diagnoses correlate with an increased risk of AF, but each individual component of MetS diagnosed repeatedly also independently increased the risk of AF. Additionally, as the number of metabolic components accumulated increased, the risk of AF gradually rose.

Mechanisms underlying pathological Ca2+ handling in diseases of the heart

Satadru K. Lahiri et al.

Summary: This article reviews the importance of precisely regulated intracellular Ca2+ signaling through various channels and transporters in cardiomyocyte contraction for maintaining normal cardiac rhythm and contractility. It also discusses the contribution of inherited or acquired defects in Ca2+ channel subunits to the development of heart diseases, along with recent insights into the role of protein phosphatase subunits and SPEG in atrial fibrillation, heart failure, and cardiomyopathies. Additionally, the review summarizes current drug therapies and new advances in genome editing as therapeutic strategies for cardiac diseases caused by abnormal intracellular Ca2+ signaling.

Summary: In this study, acalabrutinib was found to be noninferior to ibrutinib in terms of progression-free survival in patients with CLL, with a lower incidence of cardiovascular adverse events. This suggests that acalabrutinib may be a more tolerable option for continuous therapy in this patient population.

Implantable loop recorder detection of atrial fibrillation to prevent stroke ( The LOOP Study): a randomised controlled trial

Jesper H. Svendsen et al.

Summary: In individuals with stroke risk factors, ILR screening resulted in a three-times increase in atrial fibrillation detection and anticoagulation initiation but no significant reduction in the risk of stroke or systemic arterial embolism. These findings might imply that not all atrial fibrillation is worth screening for, and not all screen-detected atrial fibrillation merits anticoagulation.
