Surface modification of AISI 316 steel by α-MoO3 thin films grown using cathodic cage plasma deposition

Ediones Maciel de Sousa et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the growth of molybdenum trioxide thin films on AISI 316 steel using the cathodic cage plasma deposition (CCPD) technique at low temperature. The study reveals that the films deposited under 50:50 and 80:20 gases composition crystallize in the orthorhombic phase without secondary phases, with thicknesses of 5 μm and 1 μm respectively. Vickers microhardness measurements show that low temperature plasma deposition maximizes the surface hardness of AISI 316 steel with excellent adhesion and plasticity.

Hazardous impacts of glyphosate on human and environment health: Occurrence and detection in food

Deeksha Rawat et al.

Summary: With the decreasing farming lands due to the growing human population, agricultural scientists are developing new strategies for effective crop management. However, the excessive use of herbicides to deal with the loss caused by small plants and herbs has raised concerns about its environmental and health effects. Glyphosate, extensively used for the past 40 years with assumed negligible effects, has now been classified as a carcinogenic toxic component by the World Health Organization and banned in 2017. This review discusses the importance of glyphosate monitoring in the food matrix, its environmental and health effects, and advanced analytical techniques for its detection.

Applying an instrument-agnostizing methodology for the standardization of pesticide quantitation using different liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry platforms: A case study

Rosalia Lopez-Ruiz et al.

Summary: Liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (LC-MS) is a powerful technique commonly used for pesticide residue analysis in agri-food matrices. In this study, an instrument-agnostic method was used to set standard retention scores (SRSs) for identification and quantitation of compounds. The results showed that this methodology could be useful for minimizing differences between LC-MS systems.

3D silver metallized nanotrenches fabricated by nanoimprint lithography as flexible SERS detection platform

Alia Colnita et al.

Summary: In this study, highly sensitive substrates with potential as Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) detection platforms were developed using nanoimprint lithography nanotrenches in plastic and nanostructured silver (Ag) films. The contribution of the periodic Ag nanopattern in the SERS signal was found to be significant, with an enhancement factor (EF) of up to 107 for the SERS detection platform with a 25 nm Ag layer on top of the periodic nanotrenches. The substrate showed a considerably lower limit of detection (LOD) for SERS and better signal uniformity and reproducibility.

Summary: This study compares the detection of glyphosate using surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) with gold and silver nanoparticles and three different laser excitations. The results show that silver nanoparticles at 532 nm excitation and gold nanoparticles at 785 nm excitation have the best detection limits. Additionally, the use of cysteamine-modified silver nanoparticles improves the detection limits for all three laser excitations.

Summary: In this study, highly sensitive substrates for Surface-Enhanced-Raman-Scattering (SERS) spectroscopy were developed by decorating silicon nanowires (SiNWs) with silver nanostructures using single-step Metal Assisted Chemical Etching (MACE). The substrates showed considerably lower limit of detection (LOD) and better uniformity in SERS activity when decorated with silver aggregates compared to dendritic structures. Enhancement factors ranging from 10^5 to 10^10 were calculated, demonstrating very high SERS sensitivities for analytical applications.
