A review on challenges, recent progress and applications of silica nanoparticles based superhydrophobic coatings

Konica Sharma et al.

Summary: In recent decades, there has been a growing interest in the study of superhydrophobic coatings (SHCs) due to their wide-ranging applications in various industries. While there are numerous review papers on SHCs, minimal attention has been given to silica nanoparticles-based SHCs. However, silica nanoparticles are considered ideal materials for SHCs due to their abundance, affordability, transparency, and surface modification capabilities. This work focuses on the challenges, recent progress, and applications of silica nanoparticles-based superhydrophobic coatings.

Sol-gel derived silica: A review of polymer-tailored properties for energy and environmental applications

Karthikeyan Baskaran et al.

Summary: With the increasing global population, there is a growing demand for high specific surface area (SSA) materials for energy and environmental applications. Silica-based materials with high SSA, such as aerogels, are popular due to their ease of formation, thermal stability, and functionalization, making them suitable for batteries, heavy metal adsorption, and gas capture. However, the weak mechanical behavior of high SSA silica, attributed to its large pore volumes, needs to be improved or modified for these applications. Additionally, the creation of macropores in these mesoporous solids is desirable for membrane applications. This review provides an overview of sol-gel formation and polymer-based tailoring of silica, as well as the applications and challenges associated with polymer-tailored high SSA silica materials in the energy and environmental fields.

Gold nanorods modified Eu: Y2O3 dispersed PVA film as a highly sensitive plasmon-enhanced luminescence probe for excellent and fast non-enzymatic detection of H2O2 and glucose

Dhananjay Kumar et al.

Summary: This article introduces a novel fluorescent sensing probe for non-enzymatic detection of H2O2 and glucose, which has high sensitivity, biocompatibility, and can be used as a disposable device. The probe shows excellent fluorescence quenching in the presence of H2O2 and glucose, with low detection limits for both analytes. The study provides insight for the synthesis of rare earth metal doped oxide flexible, non-enzyme mimicking fluorescent probes for various biomedical applications.
