The impact of DC-bus impedance on the switching performance of low-voltage silicon power MOSFETs

Franz Vollmaier et al.

Summary: Typical DC-bus stabilization for low-voltage power circuits relies on ceramic capacitors for their high capacity density and low ESR, which reduce conduction losses. However, in hard-switching and hard-commutation operation, the low ESR and high ESL of the capacitors restrict the damping of switch node voltage overshoot and introduce high-frequency ringing, impacting transistor voltage margin. This paper analyzes the impact of DC-bus impedance and proposes a DC-bus snubber based on an RC network to minimize overshoot voltage, supported by comprehensive simulations using measurement-derived component models and in-situ measurements on a test PCB. Transient measurements using a double pulse test setup further confirm the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

A Comprehensive Review of GaN-Based Bi-directional On-Board Charger Topologies and Modulation Methods

Olcay Bay et al.

Summary: The rapid growth of electric vehicle use and the demand for faster charging require the development of power electronic converters for high-power, compact, and reliable EV charging solutions. This article comprehensively reviews the use of gallium nitride (GaN) semiconductor-based bidirectional on-board chargers (OBCs) in both 400V and 800V EV applications. Evaluations of GaN-based OBC topologies regarding power conversion losses, power density, implementation considerations, power quality, electromagnetic interference, and reliability are presented. The study also includes information on commercially available GaN power modules, advancements in GaN technology, applicable industry standards, and application requirements for OBCs. Potential areas of research related to the reviewed topologies are highlighted to improve the performance and user experience of electric vehicles, ultimately supporting their widespread adoption.

Third-Harmonic-Type Modulation Minimizing the DC-Link Energy Storage Requirement of Isolated Phase-Modular Three-Phase PFC Rectifier Systems

Thomas Langbauer et al.

Summary: A three-phase ac-dc converter with high-frequency isolation can be implemented as a phase modular system using three single-phase PFC rectifier modules. The module reconfiguration allows for a wide input voltage range, and the recent literature suggests reducing the power pulsation with third-harmonic injection modulation. This paper experimentally verifies and extends the reduction in dc-link energy storage requirement achieved with harmonic injection modulation.
