A Self-Crystallized Nanofibrous Ni-GDC Anode by Magnetron Sputtering for Low-Temperature Solid Oxide Fuel Cells

Sangbong Ryu et al.

Summary: In this study, a Gd-Ce metal alloy was used instead of GDC to balance the sputtering rate of Ni and GDC, and successfully transformed into crystallized GDC under a SOFC operation environment. The optimum Ni-GDC ratio for thin-film SOFCs was clarified by depositing films with various power ratios on ScSZ electrolyte pellets. The Ni-GDC was then applied to AAO-supported SOFCs to maximize performance, with the best performance of 638 mW/cm2 at 500 degrees C.

Development of robust YSZ thin-film electrolyte by RF sputtering and anode support design for stable IT-SOFC

Chan-ho Park et al.

Summary: In this study, a gas-tight YSZ thin-film electrolyte was successfully deposited on a Ni-YSZ anode support using RF sputtering. The thin-film electrolyte exhibited high ionic conductivity and gas tightness, achieving a high open-circuit voltage and maximum power density. The study provides guidelines for the practical application of thin films as electrolytes to lower the operating temperature of SOFCs.

Effect of nanostructured grains in co-sputtered Ni-GDC thin-film anode on methane conversion kinetics for low temperature solid oxide fuel cells operating on nearly dry methane

In Won Choi et al.

Summary: Direct-methane solid oxide fuel cells (DMSOFCs) have attracted attention recently due to their simplified system, reduced cost, and the direct availability of methane fuel. In this study, a thin film deposition technique of magnetron sputtering was used to deposit an Ni-GDC thin-film anode and a Pt thin-film cathode on ScSZ electrolyte supports. The effects of GDC volume fraction in the anode on open circuit voltage and electrochemical performance were investigated. The results showed that the co-sputtered Ni-GDC anode had high performance and resistance to carbon coking, attributed to its intrinsic small grain size.

Atomic layer deposition of GDC cathodic functional thin films for oxide ion incorporation enhancement

Summary: This paper reports the successful fabrication of a GDC thin film using ALD for enhancing the performance of SOFCs. By controlling the doping ratio and adjusting the ALD supercycle configuration, the morphology, crystallinity, and chemical composition of the ALD GDC thin films were analyzed. The application of ALD GDC in a SOFC led to a significant enhancement in output power density, with a TF-SOFC achieving a high power density of 288.24 mW/cm^2 at 450 degrees C.

Tunable hydrophilicity in a surface nano-textured stainless steel thin film deposited by DC magnetron sputtering

Pakman Yiu et al.

Summary: In this study, a series of stainless steel thin films were fabricated by DC power magnetron sputtering at various argon working pressures. The films exhibited a single phase, body-centered cubic ferrite crystal structure, with a textured surface morphology composed of nano-sized pyramids at pressures of 6 mTorr and above. As the argon pressure increased, the microstructural evolution from dense, fibrous grains to coarse tapered grains was observed, leading to a significant reduction in static water contact angle.
