Molecular dynamics simulation of reinforcement mechanism of graphene/aluminum composites and microstructure evolution

Jinjie Zhou et al.

Summary: The contribution of graphene interfaces to the mechanical properties of graphene/aluminum composites with different chirality and distribution patterns was investigated using molecular dynamics methods. The composites exhibited an increase of approximately 10% in Young's modulus and 5% in tensile yield strength compared to pure aluminum. The fracture strain and yield stress of the composites were influenced by the chiral structures of graphene. Folding deformation of graphene promoted the yielding of the composites under compressive loading. The uniform distribution of graphene was found to enhance the mechanical properties of the composites.

Superior tensile properties of graphene/Al composites assisted by in-situ alumina nanoparticles

Jie Wan et al.

Summary: To solve the issue of ductility collapse in high-strength aluminum matrix composites reinforced with graphene nanosheets (GNSs), a large amount of in-situ alumina nanoparticles (-3 vol%) were introduced into the GNSs/Al composite. Microstructural characterization showed that the introduced alumina nanoparticles were alpha-Al2O3 with a diameter of about 30 nm, uniformly distributed on the Al matrix. Tensile tests revealed that the composite exhibited high tensile strength (464 MPa) and appreciable ductility (8.9%), surpassing results reported in literature. Fractographic analysis indicated that the in-situ alumina nanoparticles acted as nucleation sites for dimples, enabling strain-delocalization and enhancing the plastic deformability. Analysis on strengthening mechanisms confirmed the synergistic reinforcing effect of ex-situ GNSs and in-situ alumina nanoparticles. These findings provide guidance for improving the mechanical properties of GNSs/Al composites.

Effect of laser additive manufacturing on the microstructure and mechanical properties of TiB2 reinforced Al-Cu matrix composite

Q. Z. Wang et al.

Summary: Understanding the effect of reinforcements on microstructure evolution and strengthening mechanism is crucial for developing good performance aluminum matrix composites (AMCs) prepared by laser additive manufacturing (LAM). In this study, the roles of submicron-TiB2 particles in the grain morphology evolution, mechanical properties, and corresponding strengthening mechanism of the 2024Al matrix processed by laser directed energy deposition (L-DED) and laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) were compared. The results show that the L-DED processed TiB2p/2024Al composite has equiaxed grains, while the L-PBF processed composite only shows refinement in columnar grains. Both L-DED and L-PBF fabricated 3 wt% TiB2p/2024Al composites exhibit enhanced strength and plasticity due to grain refinement. Grain boundary strengthening, dislocation strengthening, and load transfer strengthening contribute to the increased yield strength in L-DEDed TiB2p/2024Al sample.

Microstructure and mechanical behaviors of Ti3AlC2 triggered in-situ Al3Ti and TiC reinforced 2024Al composite

Yuanbo Wang et al.

Summary: An in-situ Al3Ti and TiC reinforced 2024Al matrix composite was fabricated using hot-press sintering of Ti3AlC2 and 2024Al powders. The addition of Ti3AlC2 precursor in different volume fractions was found to affect the microstructure and mechanical properties of Al3Ti-TiC/ 2024Al composites. The in-situ formed Al3Ti and submicron TiC were homogeneously distributed in the 2024Al matrix. The tensile and compressive properties of the composites showed temperature dependence and the 20 vol.% Ti3AlC2/2024Al composite exhibited improved strength and elongation compared to pure 2024Al. The excellent performance of the Al3Ti-TiC/2024Al composites can be attributed to synergistic strengthening effects.

Architectured interfacial interlocking structure for enhancing mechanical properties of Al matrix composites reinforced with graphene nanosheets

Lizhuang Yang et al.

Summary: A new strategy of constructing interfacial interlocking structure in metal matrix composites was proposed to enhance mechanical performance. Experiments and calculations demonstrated that the robust covalent bonding between Ni NPs and GNS helps in delaying crack propagation, leading to excellent strengthening efficiency and good ductility in the obtained composites.

Interfacial Strengthening of Graphene/Aluminum Composites through Point Defects: A First-Principles Study

Xin Zhang et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigated the effects of point defects on the mechanical properties of graphene/aluminum composites, showing that the defects significantly enhance the interfacial bonding strength, especially the single vacancy defect. The formation of strong Al-C covalent bonds at the defects is found to be the fundamental reason for improving the mechanical properties.
