Numerical analysis of thermal and mechanical stress profile during the extrusion processing of plasticized starch by non-isothermal flow simulation

M. A. Emin et al.

Summary: Non-isothermal, non-Newtonian, transient flow of plasticized starch in a co-rotating twin-screw extruder was simulated using 3D CFD and particle tracking simulation. The study found that maximum stresses were generated at the tip of the screws, creating local hot spots with temperatures higher than material temperature. Increasing screw speed may reduce mechanical stresses due to decreased viscosity, but still exposes material to significantly higher temperatures. The research highlights the importance of in-depth analysis of local extrusion conditions using non-isothermal CFD and particle tracking simulations.

Innovative Drying Technologies for Biopharmaceuticals

Ashutosh Sharma et al.

Summary: In the past two decades, biopharmaceuticals have been a breakthrough in improving the quality of lives of patients with various diseases, but the need for reducing manufacturing costs is essential. Innovative drying technologies such as Spin-freeze-drying, Spray-drying, Lynfinity (R) Technology, PRINT (R) Technology, and Microglassification (TM) offer potential solutions to reduce costs, increase manufacturing capacity, and ensure product quality and safety. Incorporating Process Analytical Technology (PAT) and offline characterization techniques can provide additional information on Critical Process Parameters (CPPs) and Critical Quality Attributes (CQAs), which can further enhance biopharmaceutical processing.

The Depth-Dependent Mechanical Behavior of Anisotropic Native and Cross-Linked HheG Enzyme Crystals

Marta Kubiak et al.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of cross-linking on the mechanical and catalytic properties of HheG enzyme crystals, finding that hardness is insensitive to indentation rate and anisotropic crystal behavior is observed in plastic deformation energy fractions. After cross-linking, the fraction of elastic energy on crystal faces significantly increased, suggesting that mechanically enhanced CLECs have potential industrial applications.
