Selective synthesis of olefins via CO2 hydrogenation over transition-metal-doped iron-based catalysts

Haiyan Yang et al.

Summary: This study fabricated zinc- and sodium-modulated iron catalysts, which exhibited the best activity and stability. Copper was found to decrease the energy barrier of the rate-determining step for olefin hydrogenation and result in a lower olefin-to-paraffin ratio. The ZnO/Fe5C2 interface facilitated olefin desorption and inhibited the undesirable secondary reaction of olefins, enabling a high selectivity.

Sihang Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the dual effect of surface segregation and varied CO coverage on the reactivity of CoCu alloy in CO2 hydrogenation reactions. The relationship between C-O bond scission and further hydrogenation of intermediate *CH2O was found to be crucial for ethanol production. Atomically Dispersed Zn-Stabilized Niδ+ Enabling Tunable Selectivity for CO2 Hydrogenation

Yaning Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, Zn was introduced as a second element into Ni/ZrO2 for CO2 hydrogenation, leading to a shift in selectivity from CH4 to CO in the NiZn/ZrO2 catalyst. Structural characterization results showed that Zn was atomically dispersed in NiO and ZrO2 phases, stabilizing a higher valence state of Ni (Ni delta+) and promoting the generation of CO. These findings shed light on the O-mediated bimetallic effect of NiZn/ZrO2 and provide new insights into the rational design of more efficient heterogeneous catalysts.

Electronic modulation of InNi3C0.5/Fe3O4 by support precursor toward efficient CO2 hydrogenation to methanol

Chao Meng et al.

Summary: Carbon neutrality has brought worldwide attention to the exploration of CO2 hydrogenation to methanol, with the need for groundbreaking catalysts. A highly efficient InNi3C0.5/Fe3O4 catalyst was developed by finely tuning the electronic metal-support interaction (EMSI) using Fe3O4 precursor. The catalyst achieved a significantly higher turnover frequency compared to other Fe3O4 precursors, indicating the correlation between oxygen deficiency and EMSI-governed activity. Enhanced EMSI made the catalyst more electron-enriched, allowing easy dissociation of CO2. The InNi3C0.5/Fe3O4-N catalyst showed excellent performance in terms of methanol space time yield, selectivity, and resistance to sintering and sulfur poisoning.

Developments of the heterogeneous and homogeneous CO2 hydrogenation to value-added C2+-based hydrocarbons and oxygenated products

Shyama Charan Mandal et al.

Summary: The increasing demand for energy has led the scientific community to explore efficient methods for utilizing carbon neutral fuels using existing technologies. Carbon capture and utilization (CCU) of CO2 to create energy-rich products is becoming an important focus due to CO2 being a major greenhouse gas component. Among various CCU products, higher hydrocarbons, alcohols, and ethers are preferred due to their high energy density and low emissions. This review comprehensively evaluates the progress made in producing fuels and fuel additives like ethanol, ethylene, ethane, dimethyl ether, light olefins, jet fuels, and aromatic products through CO2 hydrogenation. The review aims to compile and analyze important features such as catalyst environment, mechanistic insights, conversion efficiency, and product selectivity from both experimental and theoretical perspectives. It is anticipated that this comprehensive review will generate significant research interest and stimulate the scientific community towards large-scale industrial production of clean energy fuels.

Prospects of Producing Higher Alcohols from Carbon Dioxide: A Process System Engineering Perspective

Chi Hung Vo et al.

Summary: Higher alcohols have the potential to be widely used in large-scale CO2 utilization, serving as chemical energy carriers and fuel additives. In this study, prospective techno-economic and environmental evaluations were conducted to examine the synthesis of 1-propanol, 1-butanol, 1-pentanol, and 1-hexanol from captured CO2 and green H2. The results showed that 1-pentanol and 1-hexanol plants are economically viable, while the costs of manufacturing the other two alcohols exceed their revenues. Sensitivity analysis suggested that the cost of H2 needs to be reduced for the processes to break even. A hybrid process combining a recently studied synthesis route and the novel route based solely on CO2 was found to reduce carbon footprint and be profitable.
