Formation of environmentally persistent free radicals on microplastics under UV irradiations

Sijia Liu et al.

Summary: Microplastics (MPs), resulting from the breakdown of plastic wastes, are widely distributed in the environment. Under ultraviolet (UV) radiation, the further fragmentation of MPs may lead to the formation of environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs). This study investigated the correlation between EPFRs concentrations and UV energy, using different types of plastics and UV light sources. The results showed that the structure of MPs and the level of UV energy influenced the generation of EPFRs. It was also observed that UVC radiation led to faster formation of free radicals compared to UVB and UVA. The study provides insights into the mechanisms of EPFRs formation on microplastic particles and highlights the broad impacts of EPFRs on the fate and transport of MPs in aquatic environments.

Aqueous Iron(IV)-Oxo Complex: An Emerging Powerful Reactive Oxidant Formed by Iron(II)-Based Advanced Oxidation Processes for Oxidative Water Treatment

Zhen Wang et al.

Summary: High-valent iron(IV)-oxo complexes play a significant role as reactive intermediates in various chemical and biological systems. Among them, the aqueous iron(IV)-oxo complex ((FeaqO2+)-O-IV) is the simplest but also the most powerful ferryl ion species, showing high reactivity and selectivity in oxidizing water treatment. This review provides a comprehensive understanding of the chemical properties, oxidation mechanisms, and kinetics of (FeaqO2+)-O-IV, with comparisons to other free radicals. Additionally, the potential role of (FeaqO2+)-O-IV in Fe-aq(2+)-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) is discussed, challenging the conventional view that free radicals dominate these AOPs.

Risk assessment of microplastic particles

Albert A. Koelmans et al.

Summary: This Review examines the properties of microplastic particles and discusses methods of assessing the risks they pose to humans and the environment. Microplastic particles are widespread in the environment and can be found in the air we breathe and the food we eat. The lack of a risk assessment framework that considers the multidimensionality of microplastic particles compared to natural particles is a key challenge. This article reviews current understanding of microplastic characteristics and effects and proposes a method for quantifying exposure and effect thresholds using probability density functions.

Accelerated Degradation of Microplastics at the Liquid Interface of Ice Crystals in Frozen Aqueous Solutions

Chen Tian et al.

Summary: Microplastics (MPs) have become a major concern due to their resistance to degradation and persistence in ecosystems. This study discovered that MPs can be rapidly degraded in frozen environments, providing a highly efficient pathway for their degradation. The findings also shed light on unusual mechanisms of MPs disposal in nature.

Generation of environmental persistent free radicals (EPFRs) enhances ecotoxicological effects of the disposable face mask waste with the COVID-19 pandemic

Ze Liu et al.

Summary: A large amount of microplastics and toxic substances were found in the leachates of disposable plastic face masks (DPFs). These DPFs leachates were confirmed to cause cytotoxicity and oxidative stress, and environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs) were generated. Surgical masks were shown to have higher risk than N95 respirators after exposure to water, releasing more microplastics, metals, and organic compounds, and generating more EPFRs.

Green synthesis of Fe3O4-onion peel biochar nanocomposites for adsorption of Cr(VI), methylene blue and congo red dye from aqueous solutions

Anuj Kumar Prajapati et al.

Summary: In this study, Fe3O4-onion peel biochar nanocomposites (Fe3O4-OPBC NCs) were synthesized using a green method, and the surface properties and pollutant removal ability were investigated. The results showed that different gas atmospheres had different effects on the surface functionality, surface area, and porosity of the nanocomposites. Fe3O4-OPBC-1 and Fe3O4-OPBC-2 NCs exhibited excellent adsorption capacity for Cr(VI), MB, and CR dyes, with Fe3O4-OPBC-1 showing higher adsorption capacity.

New insights on metal ions accelerating the aging behavior of polystyrene microplastics: Effects of different excess reactive oxygen species

Xiaoqin Yu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the aging process of polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) mediated by copper ions (Cu2+) and lead ions (Pb2+). The results showed that Cu2+ and Pb2+ significantly accelerated the aging rate of PS-MPs, possibly due to the generation of reactive oxygen species. Excessive production of reactive oxygen species was found to be the main reason for metal ions promoting the photo-aging of PS-MPs. Additionally, excessive reactive oxygen species were found to accelerate the formation of carbonyl groups on the surface of PS-MPs, leading to changes in their physical and chemical properties.

Inorganic anions influenced the photoaging kinetics and mechanism of polystyrene microplastic under the simulated sunlight: Role of reactive radical species

Kecheng Zhu et al.

Summary: This study systematically explored the photoaging process of polystyrene microplastic (PS-MP) in the presence of commonly-found inorganic anions. It was found that the addition of these ions led to significant changes in the morphology, functional groups, and molecular weight of the photoaging PS-MP. The photoaging process followed a pseudo-first-order kinetic model, and the photoaging rate constant was calculated to be higher in the presence of inorganic anions compared to ultrapure water. Indirect photolysis, involving the formation of reactive radical species, was identified as the main mechanism of PS-MP photo-transformation.

Photo aging of polypropylene microplastics in estuary water and coastal seawater: Important role of chlorine ion

Xiaowei Wu et al.

Summary: This study found that the aging rate of polypropylene microplastics (PP MPs) is significantly reduced in estuary water and seawater compared to ultrapure water, leading to longer resistance time in marine environment. Additionally, an inhibitory effect on the aging process of PP MPs in seawater was found with increased Cl- concentration, due to the formation of Cl-2(center dot-) which reacts with HO2(center dot) and prevents the formation of O-2(center dot-). This study highlights the impact of water matrices on the photo aging rate of MPs in natural water.
