The inactivation and destruction of viruses by reactive oxygen species generated through physical and cold atmospheric plasma techniques: Current status and perspectives

Neha Kaushik et al.

Summary: This review critically examines methods for generating reactive oxygen species (ROS) and explores their potential as a solution for virus deactivation. The study highlights the ability of ROS to directly eradicate pathogens through oxidative stress and indirectly through non-oxidative mechanisms. Additionally, the novel and environmentally friendly cold plasma delivery system for virus destruction is discussed in detail.

Multifunctional BODIPY embedded non-woven fabric for CO release and singlet oxygen generation

Sanchita Shah et al.

Summary: In this study, we prepared a material that can release CO and generate singlet oxygen simultaneously using dipico-lylamine appended BODIPY-manganese(I) tricarbonyl complexes embedded in a polymer matrix. The resulting non-woven fabrics showed CO release and singlet oxygen generation upon irradiation, and exhibited strong photocytotoxicity to c6 cancer cells. These fabrics possess rapid CO release, significant singlet oxygen generation, indefinite dark stability, good biocompatibility, and negligible dark toxicity, making them a promising candidate for phototherapeutic applications.

Highly stable, antiviral, antibacterial cotton textiles via molecular engineering

Ji Qian et al.

Summary: Conventional methods of fabricating antiviral and antibacterial textiles often suffer from degradation after long-term use, as the functional additives on the fabric surface can leach out. In this study, copper ions were impregnated into the cellulose matrix of textiles, forming a copper ion-textile (Cu-IT) that exhibited strong coordination bonding with cellulose chains. The Cu-IT demonstrated high antiviral and antibacterial performance against various viruses and bacteria, and its excellent air/water retainability and mechanical stability made it suitable for daily use and repeated washing.

The role of hydrolysis in biological effects of molybdenum cluster with DMSO ligands

Ekaterina Pronina et al.

Summary: Biological applications of octahedral molybdenum cluster complexes are complicated by their hydrolytic instability, but hydrolysis process can be used as an important tool for regulating specific biological effects. In this study, it was found that the luminescence and biological properties of the unstable cluster complex changed with the degree of hydrolysis, with the aged solution showing lower dark cytotoxicity and higher cellular uptake.

Synergetic Effect of Mo6 Clusters and Gold Nanoparticles on the Photophysical Properties of Both Components

Evgeniya D. Novikova et al.

Summary: Photodynamic and photothermal therapies are promising candidates for multimodal anticancer therapies, and combining octahedral molybdenum clusters with plasmonic spherical gold nanoparticles can enhance their photophysical properties synergistically. By careful selection of spacing between the cluster and the gold nanoparticle, significant improvements in luminescence and photosensitizing properties of the cluster were achieved compared to similar gold-free particles. The cluster complex also facilitated energy conversion to heat by gold particles, increasing the heating rate under laser irradiation.

Optical property trends in a family of {Mo6I8} aquahydroxo complexes

Margarita V. Marchuk et al.

Summary: This study investigates the optical properties of octahedral molybdenum cluster complexes, identifying the influence of crystal packing and ligand environment on their absorption and emission properties. The research also determines the four-component nature of cluster emission through Gaussian deconvolution of photoluminescence spectra. It is found that the impact of ligand type and crystal density decreases as the spectra move to the lower-energy red part, with protonation of hydroxo ligands significantly reducing absorption in the visible spectral region.
