Protein-lipid Association in Lizard Chemical Signals

M. Mangiacotti et al.

Summary: Chemical communication in lizards involves complex blends of lipids and proteins, which play a role in semiochemical and structural functions. This study found a strong correlation between the composition and complexity of the protein and lipid fractions in lizard gland secretions. The protein fraction composition was influenced by specific compounds, while the complexity of the protein pattern increased with lipid complexity. Enzymes found in the association between proteins and lipids may confer dynamic properties to the blend, suggesting a new perspective on protein role in communication.

Functional Protein Composition in Femoral Glands of Sand Lizards (Lacerta agilis)

Alejandro Ibanez et al.

Summary: This study investigates the expression and functions of proteins in the femoral glands of male sand lizards using mass spectrometry-based proteomics. The results reveal variation in the total number of proteins among individuals and show that the consistently expressed proteins are mainly related to the immune system, antioxidant activity, and lipid metabolism. Interestingly, the study also finds expression of the Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) in the femoral glands.

Evolutionary and biogeographical support for species-specific proteins in lizard chemical signals

Marco Mangiacotti et al.

Summary: Species-specific protein components in animal signals aid in species recognition and reducing the risks of mating mismatches and interbreeding. Research on lizard chemical signals reveals that protein composition is species-specific, with greater divergence in protein patterns seen in sympatric, closely related species. Proteins in lizard signals show low phylogenetic signal, recent and steep increase in relative disparity, and a higher rate of evolutionary change compared with non-specific signal traits.

Highly accurate protein structure prediction for the human proteome

Kathryn Tunyasuvunakool et al.

Summary: Using the AlphaFold method, the structural coverage of the proteome has been significantly expanded, covering 98.5% of human proteins with 58% of residues having confident predictions and 36% having very high confidence. Introducing new metrics to interpret the dataset and identify disordered regions, this study aims to provide high-quality predictions for generating biological hypotheses.
