Polycystic ovary syndrome

Anju E. Joham et al.

Summary: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) affects 5-18% of women and is a reproductive, metabolic, and psychological condition. Its complex cause includes genetic and epigenetic susceptibility, hypothalamic and ovarian dysfunction, excess androgen exposure, insulin resistance, and adiposity-related mechanisms. The diagnostic criteria generate four phenotypes and treatment involves a combination of lifestyle alterations and medical management.

Changes in Ghrelin and Glucagon following a Low Glycemic Load Diet in Women with PCOS

Sarah E. Hoover et al.

Summary: The study suggests that in women with PCOS who have adapted to a low GL diet, a low GL meal can reduce ghrelin and increase glucagon. Further research is needed to determine the influence of diet composition on ad libitum intake in women with PCOS.

Dietary Modification for Reproductive Health in Women With Polycystic Ovary Syndrome: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Yujie Shang et al.

Summary: This study found that diet is significantly related to improved fertility outcomes, reproductive endocrine, and clinical hyperandrogenism in women with PCOS. Low-carbohydrate diets were more effective in optimizing reproductive outcomes, while calorie restriction was critical in ameliorating hyperandrogenism. The positive effects were associated with the treatment duration, with longer duration leading to greater improvement.

Improvements in PCOS characteristics and phenotype severity during a randomized controlled lifestyle intervention

Alexandra L. P. Dietz de Loos et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of weight loss interventions on women with polycystic ovary syndrome. Results showed that lifestyle interventions had more profound improvements on PCOS characteristics compared to standard care, and weight loss significantly ameliorated ovulatory dysfunction and hyperandrogenism. It is recommended that a three-component lifestyle intervention aimed at a 5-10% weight loss should be considered for women with PCOS before pregnancy.
