Shear stress induced phase transitions of cubic Eu2O3 under non-hydrostatic pressures

Sheng Jiang et al.

Summary: Pressure-induced phase transitions in cubic Eu2O3 were studied using in situ high-pressure synchrotron angle dispersive x-ray diffraction and Raman scattering measurements. The results showed that the phase transitions of cubic Eu2O3 depended on the nature of stress loading. Unlike the transformation into a hexagonal structure under hydrostatic pressure, the cubic Eu2O3 began to transform into a monoclinic phase at a non-hydrostatic pressure of about 4.3 GPa, with the monoclinic to hexagonal phase transition occurring at about 6.4 GPa. The study also provided evidence for the shear stress-induced cubic to monoclinic phase transition in cubic Eu2O3 and its corresponding mechanism.

Non-resonant energy transfer from Eu3+ to Yb3+ in C-type and B-type (Eu1-xYbx)2O3 nanocrystals

M. T. Candela et al.

Summary: The structural and spectroscopic properties of (Eu1-xYbx)(2)O-3 nanocrystals with cubic (C-type) and monoclinic (B-type) crystalline structures have been studied. It has been found that under visible excitation, an efficient energy transfer process occurs from Eu3+ ions to Yb3+ ions, resulting in simultaneous emissions of visible and near-infrared light.

Lattice Dynamics and Structural Phase Transitions in Eu2O3

Jan Lazewski et al.

Summary: Using density functional theory, the structural and lattice dynamical properties of europium sesquioxide (Eu2O3) in various phases were studied and compared with experimental data. The phonon density of states in the cubic structure was analyzed and compared with nuclear inelastic scattering data, showing a slight shift in the experimental spectrum due to compressive strain induced by the substrate. Based on lattice and phonon properties, the mechanisms of structural transitions between different phases of Eu2O3 were examined.

Lattice dynamics study of (Gd1-xYbx)2O3(x=0.11) at high pressure

Julia Mari-Guaita et al.

Summary: This study reports an experimental investigation of (Gd1-xYbx)(2)O-3 under high pressure using Raman scattering measurements and ab initio calculations, revealing a phase transition sequence different from that of pure Gd2O3. Theoretical calculations helped identify different polymorphs and assign the symmetry of Raman-active modes in the three phases. The pressure coefficients of Raman-active modes in the three phases were reported and compared to those of pure Gd2O3 and other rare-earth sesquioxides.
