A Distribution Line Fault Location Estimation Algorithm Based on Electromagnetic Time-Reversal Method Calculated in the Finite Difference Time Domain

Jian Sun et al.

Summary: In this article, a fault location estimation algorithm based on electromagnetic time-reversal (EMTR) and calculated using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method is proposed to solve the problems of calculation efficiency and fault location accuracy in EMTR. The algorithm improves the efficiency by obtaining fault current at any transverse branch of the distribution line through one-time simulation and achieves accurate fault location estimation even with a low sampling rate.

Mathematical Study on Traveling Waves Phenomena on Three Phase Transmission Lines - Part I: Fault-Launched Waves

Fernando Marinho de Magalhaes Junior et al.

Summary: This article presents a mathematical study on the propagation phenomena of traveling waves (TWs) on three-phase power lines under fault conditions. The article is divided into two parts, with this part focusing on the analytical development of expressions that describe fault-launched TWs as functions of line and fault parameters. From the mathematical representation of TWs launched by faults, more reliable TW-based applications can be designed, justifying the significance of this study.

Mathematical Study on Traveling Waves Phenomena on Three Phase Transmission Lines - Part II: Reflection and Refraction Matrices

Fernando Marinho de Magalhaes Junior et al.

Summary: This study continues to focus on the reflection and refraction of traveling waves launched by faults on three-phase transmission lines, obtaining mathematical expressions that represent the behavior of reflected and refracted voltage and current traveling waves. The validity of the results is demonstrated through simulation using the Alternative Transients Program (ATP), proving the mixing mode phenomena and validating the traveling wave reflection and refraction matrices, highlighting the usefulness of the presented mathematical study in the development of modern traveling wave-based applications.

A novel fault location method for hybrid lines based on traveling wave

Liwei Xie et al.

Summary: In this paper, a novel fault traveling wave-based location method is proposed for hybrid lines. The method defines a node ratio coefficient value based on the amplitude of the traveling wave and compares it with the values at junction nodes and fault points to determine the fault line section. A double-ended fault location method is then revised by adding compensation factors to mitigate the effect of traveling wave velocity changes. Additionally, the paper proposes the extreme-point symmetric mode decomposition method and the Teager energy operator to address the detection problems of arrival time for the traveling wave signals.
