A TBAI (tetrabutylammonium iodide)-catalyzed direct alpha-oxyacylation of carbonyl compounds from readily available toluene derivatives has been developed. The distinguished features of this metal-free protocol include the employment of simple starting material, a wide carbonyl compound scope, and mild reaction conditions.
