Silencing Queerness - Community and Family Relationships with Young Ethnic Queers in Aotearoa New Zealand

C. Nakhid et al.

Summary: The contribution of family and community to the lives of ethnic young people is well-documented. However, queer ethnic young people often face compromised support from their family and community due to homophobic attitudes and behaviors influenced by misinformation, religious beliefs, and cultural practices. This qualitative study sheds light on the impact of community attitudes and behaviors on the family and community relationships of queer ethnic young people. Gossip, rumors, silence, stigma, and respectability politics result in gender silencing and monitoring, rejection, and self-exclusion. These behaviors exacerbate feelings of cultural alienation in a society where ethnic peoples are already racialized and minoritized, and where the lack of support systems compounds an unsafe environment for queer ethnic young people. Education and interventions at both interpersonal and communal levels are needed to address homonegative attitudes within ethnic communities.

Why Doesn't the Decriminalisation of Same-Sex Sexuality and Sex Work Ensure Rights? The Legality and Social Acceptance of Transgressive Sexualities in Urban Mozambique

Carolien J. Aantjes et al.

Summary: Despite the introduction of new legal standards in Mozambique that no longer criminalize same-sex sexuality and sex work, there is little resonance due to conflicting religious, sexual, gender, and socio-cultural norms. Sensitization and rehabilitation for LGBTI people and sex workers are considered essential, but the country's commitment to internationally recognized rights obligations is weakened by ambiguous language in legislation and inconsistencies between laws.
