Excess Weight in Relation to Lifestyle Habits in Spanish First-Year University Students: Differences between Pre- and Post-COVID-19-A Serial Cross-Sectional Study Based on uniHcos Project

Natalia Hernandez-Segura et al.

Summary: The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between body weight and diet, physical activity, and other habits among freshman students, and to determine whether these habits have changed in the post-COVID-19 era. A cross-sectional study was conducted using data from 11 Spanish universities, with a total of 10,096 first-year university students participating. The results showed that students who did not meet the WHO criteria for physical activity, spent long hours sitting, and skipped breakfast had a higher prevalence of obesity. The study also found that the prevalence of overweight/obesity increased significantly during the lockdown period.

Molecular Changes in Relation to Alcohol Consumption and Hepatocellular Carcinoma

Reina Sasaki-Tanaka et al.

Summary: Alcohol is a major cause of liver diseases, such as liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. This is due to the conversion of alcohol to acetaldehyde in hepatocytes, leading to various liver damage, as well as the production of toxins from intestinal bacteria aggravating inflammation. Genetic factors also play a role in this process.

Comparison of the role of alcohol consumption and qualitative abdominal fat on NAFLD and MAFLD in males and females

Masahiro Sogabe et al.

Summary: This study found that male patients with MAFLD had higher prevalence of metabolic dysregulation, ratio of visceral fat area to subcutaneous fat area, and noninvasive liver fibrosis scores compared to those with NAFLD. However, these differences were not significant in female patients. Furthermore, among male patients, those in the MAFLD group with alcohol consumption exceeding 70g/week had significantly higher noninvasive liver fibrosis scores compared to the NAFLD group.
