Estimating Nephron Number from Biopsies: Impact on Clinical Studies

Darya Morozov et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the accuracy of estimating nephron number using biopsy and imaging techniques, as well as the influence of sample size and biopsy location on the estimates. The results showed that single biopsy and virtual biopsy had moderate accuracy in estimating nephron number, and single biopsy could detect differences in nephron number among large cohorts of subjects.

Total Nephron Number and Single-Nephron Parameters in Patients with IgA Nephropathy

Hirokazu Marumoto et al.

Summary: In patients with progressive IgA nephropathy, the number of non-sclerotic glomeruli decreases while sclerotic glomeruli increase with advancing CKD stage. Single-nephron glomerular filtration rate is minimally affected by CKD stage, indicating limited compensatory capacity for diseased glomeruli, while single-nephron urine protein excretion is closely associated with clinicopathologic findings.
