Tailoring the humidity response of cellulose nanocrystal-based films by specific ion effects

Maoqi Lin et al.

Summary: The optical properties and humidity response of iridescent films made of CNC and PEG can be customized through the incorporation of specific electrolytes. The choice of anions has a significant effect on the color and color range of the films, while the effect of cations is negligible. Anions with the same valency result in a red-shift color in the dried state. Salting-in type anions exhibit a greater color changing range during RH changes compared to salting-out type anions.

Macroscopic mapping of the linear in-plane anisotropy of nanocellulosic thin films by Mueller matrix polarimetry

Randy Mujica et al.

Summary: The present work characterizes the macroscopic optical anisotropy of cellulose nanocomposite multilayer thin films using grazing incidence spraying. Mueller matrix polarimetry is used to investigate the polarization properties of these films, which consist of in-plane aligned cellulose nanofibrils embedded in a polyelectrolyte multilayer. Linear birefringence is the predominant polarization property resulting from the unidirectional organization of the cellulose nanofibrils, and the Mueller matrix decomposition allows the determination of their actual structural birefringence. Modeling the sample as an effective medium provides an expression that describes its linear birefringence as a function of various parameters. This nondestructive technique is of great interest for optoelectronic applications.

Confined Crystallization in the Self-Assembled Nanostructures of Cellulose Nanocrystals and Polyethylene Glycol

Mengfan Lu et al.

Summary: The thin layers of semicrystallized polymers on nanoparticles can greatly impact the properties of nanocomposites. This study focuses on the confinement crystallization in the coassembled composites of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG). The composition-dependent changes in composite morphology and crystallization are extensively characterized using various techniques.

Monolithic Chiral Nematic Organization of Cellulose Nanocrystals under Capillary Confinement

Minkyu Kim et al.

Summary: Bioenabled crack-free chiral nematic films were successfully prepared using cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) in a capillary confinement with specific modifications. The modified CNC/TOPA/PEG films demonstrated improved mechanical performance, consistent vivid iridescence, and enhanced circular polarization. The addition of a small amount of TOPA proved to be crucial in achieving the best performance in preventing cracks.

Shear-Coated Linear Birefringent and Chiral Cellulose Nanocrystal Films Prepared from Non-Sonicated Suspensions with Different Storage Time

Olga Rubi Juarez-Rivera et al.

Summary: Nanocelluloses are promising materials for creating structured films with unique optical properties through different preparation techniques. This study investigated the fabrication of birefringent and chiral films from non-sonicated CNC suspensions using a shear-coating method, showing the evolution of suspensions from a gel-like shear-thinning fluid to isotropic and chiral nematic liquid crystalline phases. The films prepared from non-sonicated fresh CNC suspensions exhibit birefringence, while those from stored suspensions reflect left-handed polarized light, with quantification achieved using a Mueller matrix formalism.

Optical Chirality Determined from Mueller Matrices

Hans Arwin et al.

Summary: The analysis of Mueller matrix transmission facilitates the study of optical activity in samples with linear anisotropy and depolarization, important for the development of applications in chiroptics. Optical chirality, described by electromagnetic and magnetoelectric material tensors, contributes to the Mueller matrix. Spectroscopic ellipsometry is used to measure chiral phenomena, with three methods discussed for determining chirality parameters.

Olga Rubi Juarez-Rivera et al.

Summary: Chiral films are sensitive to changes in humidity and can be used for humidity detection and optical devices. This study reports the fabrication of supported chiral CNC films on glass substrates using a shear-coating method, and provides a full characterization of their polarization properties. Mueller-matrix data are used to quantitatively characterize the structural origin of color in the films.

Optically Ambidextrous Reflection and Luminescence in Self-Organized Left-Handed Chiral Nematic Cellulose Nanocrystal Films

Jiawei Tao et al.

Summary: This research discovered that self-assembled cellulose nanocrystal films exhibit ambidextrous circularly polarized light reflection and chiroptical luminescence, thanks to the left-handed chiral nematic structure with PBG layers. The dual chiroptical properties can be manipulated by adjusting parameters such as temperature, concentration, and characteristics, showing the potential of these films for anti-counterfeiting optical labels.
