High-performance pyrrolidinium-based poly(ionic liquid) binders for Li-ion and Li-air batteries

S. Vauthier et al.

Summary: The role of binders is crucial to achieve high performance and long cycle lives in next-generation electrodes for lithium batteries. In this study, PDADMA poly(ionic liquid)s with fluorinated anions were used as cathode binders in Li-ion and Li-air batteries, showing improved cell performances and enhanced capacity values, rate performance, and cycling stability. The proposed fluorinated PDADMA Poly(ionic liquid)s can be a highly competitive alternative to conventional binders used nowadays in Li-ion and Li-air batteries.

Unraveling the Influence of Li+-cation and TFSI--anion in Poly(ionic liquid) Binders for Lithium-Metal Batteries

Rafael Del Olmo et al.

Summary: Ion transport in composite electrodes is crucial for the performance of lithium-metal batteries, and the use of ionic conducting polymers as binders has been suggested. In this study, two poly(ionic liquid) polymers were analyzed as binders in LiFePO4 cathodes, and PMTFSI-Li showed the best performance with high specific capacity and long lifespan. Surprisingly, the presence of ionic binders also affected the lithium metal deposition morphology, leading to a more homogeneous plating and mitigating mossy lithium growth.

Water-Based LiNi0.83Co0.12Mn0.05O2 Electrodes with Excellent Cycling Stability Fabricated Using Unconventional Binders

S. Radloff et al.

Summary: Water-based processing of positive Li-ion battery electrodes is important for green and sustainable electrode production. The choice of binder affects the cycle life and capacity retention of the battery. Post-mortem analysis suggests that the formation of a blocking surface layer is the main reason for performance deterioration.

Performance of Different Water-Based Binder Formulations for Ni-Rich Cathodes Evaluated in LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2//Graphite Pouch Cells

Ritu Sahore et al.

Summary: Water-based processing for lithium-ion battery electrodes offers cost and environmental advantages. In this study, four different water-based binder combinations were tested for Ni-rich LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2 (NMC811)-based cathodes, and their long-term electrochemical performance in practical pouch cells was evaluated. The results showed that two of the water-based cathode formulations performed comparably to the baseline after 1000 cycles.

Unlocking Stable Multi-Electron Cycling in NMC811 Thin-Films between 1.5-4.7 V

Abdessalem Aribia et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that using solid-state electrolyte can significantly increase the capacity of LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2 (NMC811) cathode material. In a thin-film architecture, the solid-state electrolyte stabilizes the interface, prevents capacity decay and resistance growth, allowing cycling over a wider voltage range. Compared to liquid electrolyte, solid-state electrolyte enables the Li-rich NMC811 cells to cycle at a fast rate and with high efficiency.
