Toward systematic understanding of adsorptive removal of legacy and emerging per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) by various activated carbons (ACs)

Hong-Ming Tan et al.

Summary: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) have gained attention for their persistence, bioaccumulation, and toxicity. Various activated carbons (ACs) show variability in adsorptive performance towards PFASs. This study comprehensively investigates the adsorption of ten PFASs on different ACs to understand their removal mechanism. Results indicate that GAC-1 and PAC-1 remove over 90% of all target PFASs, and the adsorption mechanisms involve electrostatic interaction, hydrophobic interaction, surface complexation, and hydrogen bonding.

Surface-modified biopolymers for removing mixtures of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances from water: Screening and removal mechanisms

Aswin Kumar Ilango et al.

Summary: The researchers synthesized and tested alginate and chitosan based fibers/aerogels, as well as poly-ethyleneimine functionalized fibers/aerogels, for the adsorption of 12 PFASs from water. The ALGPEI-3 and GTH CTNPEI aerogels showed the best sorption performance, with hydrophobic interaction being the dominant mechanism. These aerogels exhibited fast and superior sorption of hydrophobic PFASs and retained their shape even at extreme pH conditions. The maximum adsorption capacity of ALGPEI-3 and GTH-CTNPEI aerogels for total PFASs removal was found to be 3045 and 12,133 mg/g, respectively. A rating of 8 out of 10 is given for the importance of this study.

Enhanced removal of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in complex matrices by polyDADMAC-coated regenerable granular activated carbon

Pia Ramos et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that modifying granular activated carbon (GAC) with cationic polymer poly dia-llyldimethylammonium chloride (polyDADMAC) enhances its adsorption capacity for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs). The modified GAC shows effective adsorption even in the presence of competing ions. Additionally, low-power ultrasound can be used to desorb PFASs from the polyDADMAC-GAC, making it a regenerable adsorbent.

Uptake of individual and mixed per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) by soybean and their effects on functional genes related to nitrification, denitrification, and nitrogen fixation

Tao Jiang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the distribution of PFAS in a soil-microbe-soybean system and its impacts on genes involved in the nitrogen cycle. The results showed that PFAS mixtures had a synergistic uptake by soybean shoots and significantly affected the abundance of nitrification and denitrification genes in the soil, as well as the expression of N fixation gene in soybean nodules. This work provides valuable insights into the distribution of PFAS and their impacts on the N cycle, and contributes to assessing the risks of PFAS to soybean.

Adsorption of perfluoroalkyl acids on granular activated carbon supported chitosan: Role of nanobubbles

Wei Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, we investigated the role of nanobubbles in the adsorption process of perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) using a chitosan/granular activated carbon composite adsorbent. Our findings showed that nanobubbles can enhance the removal rate of PFAAs, and PFAAs with different chain lengths have different adsorption mechanisms. Longer chain PFAAs can be directly enriched on the composite adsorbents, while electrostatic interactions primarily affect the adsorption of shorter chain PFAAs.

Perfluorooctane sulfonate removal by metal-organic frameworks (MOFs): Insights into the effect and mechanism of metal nodes and organic ligands

Changwei Zhao et al.

Summary: Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with different metal nodes and organic ligands were prepared and used to remove perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) from water. Among them, MIL-53(Al) showed the best PFOS adsorption performance due to its highest unsaturated metal active sites and smallest pore size, while longer organic ligands were found to contribute to better PFOS entry and performance. The presence of Fe3+ ions in MOFs/PFOS system improved PFOS removal through bridging and interaction, as confirmed by density functional theory (DFT) calculation. These optimized MOFs are promising adsorbents for sustainable removal of PFOS from water.

Can porous carbons be a remedy for PFAS pollution in water? A perspective

Dipendu Saha et al.

Summary: Per- and polyfluoro alkyl substances (PFAS) are emerging pollutants in water sources worldwide, raising concerns about their potential health impacts. One proposed method for PFAS removal is through adsorption in porous carbons, which have shown promising features but face challenges in practical applications. By modifying the structure and surface functionalities of porous carbons, better adsorption efficiency for PFAS can be achieved. Incorporating computational analysis may aid in designing superior porous carbons for PFAS removal.
