Effects of imported recharge on fluoride trends in groundwater used for public supply in California

Jennifer S. Harkness et al.

Summary: This study investigates the spatial and temporal trends in fluoride concentrations in public supply wells in California. The study finds that less than 2% of the groundwater resources used for public supply exceed the maximum contaminant level, and approximately 14% show significant recent trends, with 10% showing decreasing trends. The study also evaluates potential drivers for these trends in two regions in southern California.

Soil characteristics and redox properties of infiltrating water are determinants of microbial communities at managed aquifer recharge sites

Nicole Schrad et al.

Summary: This study conducted a meta-analysis of soil microbial communities at pilot-scale field sites simulating shallow infiltration for managed aquifer recharge (MAR). The research found distinct differences in microbial community changes under different soil and carbon amendment conditions. Soil texture was identified as the main factor influencing whether the microbial community composition changed due to infiltration, suggesting that sandy soil with carbon-rich amendments may be most impacted by infiltration.

Managed aquifer recharge as a drought mitigation strategy in heavily-stressed aquifers

D. E. Wendt et al.

Summary: This study assesses the impacts of Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) in heavily-stressed aquifers using a case study of California's Central Valley. MAR is shown to alleviate groundwater droughts, increase groundwater levels, and contribute to sustainable groundwater management. Increased institutional support is recommended to ensure the longevity and success of MAR as a regional drought mitigation strategy in heavily-stressed aquifers.

Mobilization of Arsenic and Other Naturally Occurring Contaminants during Managed Aquifer Recharge: A Critical Review

Sarah Fakhreddine et al.

Summary: Population growth and climate variability have increased the need to enhance freshwater security and diversify water supplies, leading to the global use of managed aquifer recharge (MAR). However, the introduction of recharge water may alter geochemical and hydrological conditions in receiving aquifers, potentially mobilizing toxic naturally occurring contaminants and threatening human and ecosystem health.

Fluoride release from carbonate-rich fluorapatite during managed aquifer recharge: Model-based development of mitigation strategies

David Schafer et al.

Summary: This study utilized reactive transport modeling to investigate the impact of engineered manipulation of MAR source water composition on groundwater fluoride contamination. The results showed that adding calcium and sodium to the source water was effective in reducing fluoride concentrations, while increasing pH was found to be inefficient in significantly reducing fluoride concentrations.
