Summary: Caproate, which can be produced through microbial chain elongation, shows great potential as a carbon-neutral alternative to fossil-based products. However, its production performance needs improvement for industrial applications. This study found that the addition of powdered activated carbon (PAC) significantly enhanced the production, yield, and selectivity of caproate. PAC promoted ethanol oxidation and improved the efficiency of the reverse beta oxidation (RBO) pathway, leading to increased caproate synthesis. Additionally, PAC affected the microbial community, enriching caproate-producing bacteria and eliminating irrelevant ones. Metagenomic analysis revealed that PAC up-regulated key enzyme-encoding genes responsible for ethanol oxidation and RBO pathway, thus improving caproate production. This study provides insights into the mechanism of PAC promotion of caproate generation, laying the foundation for large-scale production of caproate.

Summary: In-depth exploration of the relationship among different adsorption sites is conducive to design efficient adsorbents for the removal of target pollutants from water. This study applied experiments, multivariate non-linear regression, and density functional theory calculations to investigate the possible synergistic effects of three nitrogen-containing sites on the surface of cow dung biochar for sulfamethoxazole adsorption. It was found that the combination of pyridinic N and pyrrolic N sites exhibited a strong synergistic effect on sulfamethoxazole adsorption. The results provide insights into the adsorption mechanism and valuable information for designing efficient adsorbents in water treatment.

Summary: This study investigates the process optimization of powdered activated carbon (PAC) adsorption and potassium permanganate (KMnO4) pre-oxidation for the control of 2-Methylisoborneol (2-MIB) in drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs). It was found that pre-oxidation with KMnO4 does not affect the adsorption of 2-MIB by PAC. However, when PAC and KMnO4 are added simultaneously, the adsorption efficiency of 2-MIB decreases with an increase in KMnO4 dosage. This is due to the shrinking of micropore volume caused by KMnO4. Therefore, it is recommended to dose KMnO4 early to avoid negative effects on PAC for 2-MIB removal. This study provides practical guidance and theoretical fundamentals for the operation of DWTPs using KMnO4 pre-oxidation and PAC for 2-MIB removal.

Summary: The study identified the presence of 2-MIB in volatile organic compounds produced by microbes in soil, with implications for removing off-flavors in water sources. The high ratio of 1-MC/2-MIB suggests microbial degradation of 2-MIB, which was further confirmed by adding synthetic 2-MIB to biologically active soil.

Summary: This paper introduces the application of biological activated carbon (BAC) process in eliminating disinfection by-products (DBPs) precursors in water systems. It first presents the basic knowledge of BAC process and then compares the mechanisms of different water treatment technologies and the treatability of different DBP precursors. Furthermore, recent developments and breakthroughs in the removal of DBP precursors using BAC process are summarized, followed by recommendations for future research and knowledge gaps.

Summary: Off-flavours in fish products from recirculating aquaculture systems, caused by geosmin and 2-MIB produced by actinobacteria, myxobacteria, and cyanobacteria, are a significant issue impacting the fish farming industry. These off-flavours deteriorate the quality of fish and require additional costs for removal.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of combination processes on the removal of 2-MIB and coexisting organic substances in drinking water. The results showed that PAC pretreatment and H2O2 preoxidation significantly increased the removal ratio of 2-MIB. The combination of NF with PAC and CSF achieved the highest removal ratio of 98%.

Summary: Sites contaminated by heavy metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from e-waste dismantling and coking plants have negative effects on soil microbiomes. This study analyzed the contamination of heavy metals and PAHs in these sites and evaluated their influence on soil microbiomes. The results showed that the microbiomes of the contaminated sites responded differently to heavy metals and PAHs. This study enhances our understanding of how soil microbiomes respond to single and mixed contamination with heavy metals and PAHs.
