Enhanced degradation performance and mechanisms of decabromodiphenylether in homogeneous system of Fe3+ activated dithionite

Wei Song et al.

Summary: A non-photolysis system based on dithionite (DTN) was established for the treatment of brominated flame retardant (BFR) in water. Fe3+-activated DTN effectively degraded decabromodiphenylether (BDE-209) within 30 minutes, achieving simultaneous debromination and mineralization. The contribution rates of SO4·-, ·OH, and other species to BDE-209 degradation were approximately 47.5%, 30.8%, and 21.7%, respectively. A quadratic model was established to predict BDE-209 degradation efficiency in the Fe3+/DTN system.

Stormwater treatment for reuse: Current practice and future development-A review

Wenjun Feng et al.

Summary: Stormwater harvesting is an effective measure to mitigate flooding risk and pollutant migration in urban environments with increasing impermeable surfaces. Treatment of harvested stormwater provides alternative water sources for irrigation, recreation, and potable use, ensuring reliability and sustainability of water management in residential complexes. Technologies such as stormwater biofilters and constructed wetlands show promise for stormwater treatment, but the presence of excessive microbial effluent has limited widespread stormwater reuse. Further research on water disinfection technologies for stormwater treatment is needed to address different levels of fit-for-purpose reuses.

Boyan Xu et al.

Summary: This study enriched a facultative QQ consortium for AI-2-based QS disruption and discovered its quorum quenching performance in an AnMBR for membrane fouling retardation. The QQ consortium was able to degrade DPD and prolong membrane filtration operation in treating domestic wastewater. QQ reduced the content of proteins and carbohydrates and altered the composition of EPS and SMP. Moreover, QQ decreased the quantity of organics and planktonic microorganisms in the supernatant and enhanced methane production while reducing sulfate reduction.

Developing an integrated investment decision-support framework for water-sensitive urban design projects

Md Sayed Iftekhar et al.

Summary: Traditional centralized water-management systems have limitations in delivering environmental and amenity benefits in urban areas. Water-sensitive urban design (WSUD) projects are proposed as an alternative solution, offering multiple benefits such as improving water quality, water supply, aesthetics, urban cooling, recreational spaces, and biodiversity habitat. However, low investment in such systems in most cities is attributed to the challenge of monetizing the multifunctional benefits of WSUD projects and including them in comprehensive economic analyses.

Integrated electro-coagulation and gravity driven ceramic membrane bioreactor for roofing rainwater purification: Flux improvement and extreme operating case

Xing Du et al.

Summary: This study developed a novel water purification technology, EC-GDCMBR, for the purification of roofing rainwater. The EC-GDCMBR system showed improved effluent quality and greater flux due to the high permeability of the ceramic membrane and the large porosity of the biofilm formed during the EC process. The technology synergistically removed particulate matter, ammonia nitrogen, total phosphorous, organic substances, and heavy metals through coagulation, adsorption, biodegradation, and coprecipitation. Moreover, EC was found to enhance biological purification efficiency and improve NH3-N removal.

Temperature mediated the balance between stochastic and deterministic processes and reoccurrence of microbial community during treating aniline wastewater

Hui Chen et al.

Summary: Seasonal temperature changes have a significant impact on microbial community diversity, composition, and performance in wastewater treatment plants. This study investigated the effects of temperature on microbial performance and co-occurrence networks, as well as the assembly processes that determine the structure and function of microbial communities during aniline wastewater treatment. The results showed that functional redundancy played a role in maintaining excellent microbial performance throughout the process. The balance between stochastic and deterministic processes mediated the reoccurrence of microbial communities and co-occurrence networks at different temperatures.
