Rapid As(III) oxidation mediated by activated carbons: Reactive species vs. direct oxidation

Changyin Zhu et al.

Summary: Activated carbon (AC) is commonly used for pollutant removal due to its adsorption capacity, conductivity, and catalytic performance. This study found that AC can effectively mediate the oxidation of As(III) and the process is pH and oxygen concentration dependent. At pH 3.0, reactive species (H2O2 and center dot OH) contribute to As(III) oxidation, while at pH 9.5, As(III) is directly oxidized by O-2 via electron transfer from As(III) to O-2 mediated by carbon matrix under aerobic conditions. Pre-oxidation and cyclic experiments show that AC's ability to oxidize As(III) at pH 9.5 is sustainable and recyclable. This study provides new insights into pollutant oxidation by AC in the environment.

All-natural and biocompatible cellulose nanocrystals films with tunable supramolecular structure

Jie Chen et al.

Summary: Nanocomposite films were prepared by incorporating cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) with polysaccharides such as arabinogalactan (AG), galactomannan (GM) or konjac glucomannan (KGM) using a facile casting method. The addition of polysaccharides maintained transparency, promoted UV blocking properties, and greatly improved mechanical strength of the films. The interaction between hydroxyl-abundant macromolecules, smoother and tighter morphological structures, as well as disturbed crystal structures were found to be responsible for the improved properties.

Control of particulate nitrate air pollution in China

Shixian Zhai et al.

Summary: The concentration of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in China decreased by 30-50% from 2013 to 2018 due to emission controls, but the nitrate component did not decrease effectively. Increased particulate nitrate concentration during winter haze pollution events is attributed to the particulate fraction transitioning from gaseous nitric acid. Reducing ammonia emissions is suggested as an effective method to decrease the nitrate component of fine particulate matter pollution in the North China Plain.

PM2.5 polluters disproportionately and systemically affect people of color in the United States

Christopher W. Tessum et al.

Summary: In the United States, racial-ethnic minorities are disproportionately exposed to high levels of ambient fine particulate air pollution (PM2.5), with nearly all major emission categories contributing to the systemic PM2.5 exposure disparity experienced by people of color. By identifying the most inequitable emission source types by state and city, potential opportunities for addressing this persistent environmental inequity are highlighted.
