Roles and molecular mechanisms of physical exercise in cancer prevention and treatment

Qiaoyun Wang et al.

Summary: Exercise can enhance motivation to change lifestyle behaviors, improve physical function, control fatigue, and enhance quality of life in cancer patients. However, the correlation between physical exercise and carcinogenesis is often overlooked, and exercise interventions are not routinely provided to cancer patients, especially those with advanced cancer. Studies have shown that different types of cancer patients at different disease stages can benefit from tailored exercise programs.

Acute, Exercise-Induced Alterations in Cytokines and Chemokines in the Blood Distinguish Physically Active and Sedentary Aging

Lauren G. MacNeil et al.

Summary: Aging leads to a proinflammatory state, while physical activity in older adults can improve overall health and reduce inflammation. An analysis of peripheral blood from physically active and sedentary healthy individuals showed that regular physical activity did not have a significant impact on age-related changes in basal cytokines and chemokines, but older exercisers had lower levels of certain inflammatory markers at rest compared to sedentary older adults. Following acute exercise, physically active individuals of all ages exhibited a broader induction of factors in their blood compared to sedentary individuals, particularly the elderly.

Systematic review on the effects of physical exercise on cellular immunosenescence-related markers-An update

Emelyn Mathot et al.

Summary: A systematic literature study on the effects of exercise on immunosenescence-related cellular markers found that long-term exercise may have positive effects on senescent T-lymphocytes in older adults, while acute exercise can induce mobilization of naive and memory cells in older adults. Data on long-term exercise-induced effects remain scarce, and the impact of exercise on regulatory T-cells is inconclusive. Studies on Natural Killer cell counts showed varied results, while recent data indicated an increase in dendritic cells after exercise. Type and intensity of exercise have a major influence on immunosenescence-related markers, especially in older adults.

Polymorphonuclear leucocyte phagocytic function, ?8 T-lymphocytes and testosterone as separate stress-responsive markers of prolonged, high-intensity training programs

Diogo Leal et al.

Summary: Excessive exercise with limited recovery can lead to detrimental states like overreaching or overtraining syndrome, causing chronic maladaptation in endocrine and immune mechanisms. Research shows blunted testosterone responses and reduced phagocytic activity following intensified training periods, indicating potential long-term negative effects on immunity and hormone regulation.

Effect of Exercise Intensity on Cell-Mediated Immunity

Katsuhiko Suzuki et al.

Summary: Moderate-intensity exercise is believed to boost immune function and prevent acute upper respiratory infections, while low-intensity short-duration exercise seems to have minimal impact on cell-mediated immunity. Low-intensity exercises like walking and yoga can help reduce stress without harming the immune system. Further research is needed to determine the most effective exercise mode for improving immune functions.
