The intra-annual intrinsic water use efficiency dynamics based on an improved model

Xiaojin Bing et al.

Summary: This study shows that the commonly used iWUE method overestimates the water use efficiency of plants and that the iWUE value of trees in drought-stressed forests in southeast China significantly decreases in summer-autumn time.

Wind speed reconstruction from a tree-ring difference index in northeastern Inner Mongolia

Keyan Fang et al.

Summary: The lack of instrumental wind speed data limits our ability to evaluate the contributions of natural and anthropogenic processes on wind speed changes. This study developed a Tree-Ring Difference Index (TRDI) based on the characteristics of compression wood in conifer trees to reconstruct wind speed. The analysis showed significant correlations between the TRDI and recorded wind speeds, revealing long-term trends and correlations with the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO).

Moisture availability influences the formation and characteristics of earlywood of Pinus tabuliformis more than latewood in northern China

Wenqi Song et al.

Summary: Northern China is facing significant warming and drying, which has dire implications for the health of the region's forests. The growth response mechanisms of Pinus tabuliformis Carr., an important conifer in northern China, were explored to identify suitable forest management practices. The study found that relative humidity is the main factor limiting P. tabuliformis growth, with water stress from increased surface and atmospheric temperatures affecting earlywood formation. Latewood formation, on the other hand, is primarily affected by surface temperature. Climate-driven adjustments in tree-ring anatomical structure occur mainly in earlywood, with the adjustment differing between dry and wet areas.

Decoupled leaf-wood phenology in two pine species from contrasting climates: Longer growing seasons do not mean more radial growth

Julio J. Camarero et al.

Summary: Climate warming is expected to lengthen the growing season of tree species and enhance radial growth rates. However, a longer growing season may not necessarily lead to improved radial growth if wood production depends more on growth rate than on growing season length.

Auxin concentration and xylem production of Pinus massoniana in a subtropical forest in south China

Xiali Guo et al.

Summary: This study examines the relationship between growth of subtropical pine trees and auxin concentration. The results show that unlike in temperate forests, wood formation in subtropical forests does not have a clear seasonality, and there is no significant relationship between auxin concentration and number of xylem cells.

Intra-annual growth dynamics of Picea meyeri needles, shoots, and stems on Luya Mountain, North-central China

Xinyuan Ding et al.

Summary: A fixed temporal sequence of critical growth periods between apical and radial growth was found in Picea meyeri, with different correlations between the two growth types at different growth stages. The responses of the three organs to temperature during growth cessation were not consistent, indicating that radial growth may be more impacted by climate change than apical growth.

A Bimodal Pattern and Age-Related Growth of Intra-Annual Wood Cell Development of Chinese Fir in Subtropical China

Yanyan Jiang et al.

Summary: The study revealed that age plays a significant role in regulating wood cell development in trees. Younger trees have a longer duration and produce more cells in wood cell development, while older trees reach their peak growth rate earlier than younger trees. The number of cells in wood cell formation is mainly influenced by the rate rather than the duration of wood cell formation.

Origin of Intra-annual Density Fluctuations in a Semi-arid Area of Northwestern China

Jiani Gao et al.

Summary: The study found that drought events affect the formation of IADF in trees by limiting cell enlargement, resulting in narrower cells with thicker walls in the xylem. Under humid conditions, trees with IADF have fewer xylem cells than normal tree rings.

Intra-Annual Wood Formation of Cryptomeria fortunei and Cunninghamia lanceolata in Humid Subtropical China

Zhuangpeng Zheng et al.

Summary: Monitoring cambial activity in subtropical evergreen forests provides insights into the mechanisms behind xylem growth responses to climate change, aiding tree-ring-based climate reconstructions. Research on Cryptomeria fortunei and Cunninghamia lanceolata revealed that these subtropical conifers have longer vegetation periods compared to temperate and boreal forests, with growth patterns influenced by summer drought and yearly stress. These findings offer specific information on tree growth and the cellular-level impacts of climate in subtropical regions.
