ECOSTRESS Reveals the Importance of Topography and Forest Structure for Evapotranspiration from a Tropical Forest Region of the Andes

Alejandra Valdes-Uribe et al.

Summary: Tropical forests are critical for global evapotranspiration, but estimating evapotranspiration in these complex landscapes is challenging. The ECOSTRESS satellite provides a new opportunity to close observation gaps in understudied tropical regions. Using ECOSTRESS data and a random forest approach, we successfully predicted evapotranspiration in a protected tropical forest on the western slope of the Andes. Our models showed high accuracy in spatially explicit predictions, with the leaf area index and topographic variables playing key roles.

Energy-Based Approaches in Estimating Actual Evapotranspiration Focusing on Land Surface Temperature: A Review of Methods, Concepts, and Challenges

Mercedeh Taheri et al.

Summary: This review provides a clear and comprehensive classification of energy-based approaches considering the role of land surface temperature (LST) in solving the energy budget. Three general approaches using LSTs derived from climate and land surface models, satellite-based data, and energy balance closure are presented. The concepts, inputs, and assumptions of energy-based LSMs and SEB algorithms are discussed in detail, along with the limitations and challenges of these approaches.

Mimicking nature to reduce agricultural impact on water cycles: A set of mimetrics

Meine van Noordwijk et al.

Summary: Metrics of hydrological mimicry reflect the similarity in structure and functions between managed and natural ecosystems. Existing metrics are insufficient to evaluate the comprehensive impacts of human activities on water cycles. Modified evapotranspiration, effects on streamflow, and atmospheric fluxes and precipitation can be used to establish more comprehensive metrics for evaluating different hydrological mimicry options.

Vapour pressure deficit and solar radiation are the major drivers of transpiration in montane tropical secondary forests in eastern Madagascar

Chandra Prasad Ghimire et al.

Summary: This study investigated the dynamics of water uptake in young secondary forests and semi-mature forests in montane eastern Madagascar. The results showed that although the transpiration rates were low for both forests, they were comparable to those of other tropical montane sites. The young forest mainly extracted water from the intermediate soil depth, while the depth of uptake increased as the dry season progressed in the semi-mature forest for some species.

Spatial-Temporal Dynamics of Evapotranspiration in the Podkamennaya Tunguska River Basin

T. A. Burenina et al.

Summary: This study assesses the hydrological role of forest communities in the Podkamennaya Tunguska basin by analyzing their contribution to total evaporation in the watershed. Remote sensing data is used to determine evapotranspiration parameters, which are influenced by climatic data, terrestrial surface types, and landcover diversity. The study finds significant spatial and temporal variability in evapotranspiration of different forest vegetation types. The decrease in annual evapotranspiration from 2000 to 2014 is attributed to changes in meteorological parameters and the species composition of forest stands. The landscape structure of watersheds can be utilized to indicate the processes forming evapotranspiration and determine hydrologically significant boundaries.

Revisiting large-scale interception patterns constrained by a synthesis of global experimental data

Feng Zhong et al.

Summary: This study synthesizes field data from past experiments to develop a global model and dataset for rainfall interception loss. The study finds that global average interception is 73.81 mm per year, accounting for 10.53% of continental rainfall. There is significant variability in interception among different vegetation types and biomes, as supported by both the model and field data.

The Unseen Effects of Deforestation: Biophysical Effects on Climate

Deborah Lawrence et al.

Summary: Climate policy has mainly focused on carbon stocks and sequestration in forests, neglecting the impact of changes in forest cover, structure, and composition on biophysical processes and climate effects. This study highlights the importance of evaluating the combined net climate impact of carbon and biophysical effects in different latitudes. Results show that tropical deforestation leads to global warming, while at mid-latitudes, deforestation causes modest warming due to released forest carbon outweighing biophysical cooling. Beyond 50 degrees N, large-scale deforestation leads to net global cooling mainly driven by biophysical processes. Forests play a crucial role in mitigating global climate change and promoting local climate stability.

Riparian wetland properties counter the effect of land-use change on soil carbon stocks after rainforest conversion to plantations

Nina Hennings et al.

Summary: The conversion of tropical rainforests into rubber and oil palm plantations in South East Asia leads to different impacts on soil carbon stocks between riparian and well-drained areas, with riparian areas showing higher resilience due to sediment deposition and reduced oxygen availability. This study highlights the importance of considering landscape type and characteristics in evaluating the effects of land-use change on soil organic matter mineralization.

How tree species, tree size, and topographical location influenced tree transpiration in northern boreal forests during the historic 2018 drought

Jose Gutierrez Lopez et al.

Summary: Through studying the impact of the 2018 drought on high-latitude boreal forest trees in Sweden, researchers found that pine trees exhibited better transpiration control compared to spruce trees during severe drought periods. They also observed that larger trees experienced less reduction in transpiration during drought, with different responses based on species and elevation. The study emphasizes the importance of considering tree species, size, and topographic position in understanding drought responses in boreal forests.

Predicting evapotranspiration from drone-based thermography - a method comparison in a tropical oil palm plantation

Florian Ellsaesser et al.

Summary: The study tested drone-based thermography and the DATTUTDUT energy balance model against the eddy covariance technique, finding good agreement and interchangeability between the methods. The model is sensitive to net radiation assessment, but overall, drone-based thermography proves to be a reliable and promising method for evapotranspiration studies.
