What Has Longitudinal 'Omics' Studies Taught Us about Irritable Bowel Syndrome? A Systematic Review

Qin Xiang Ng et al.

Summary: This review focused on multi-omics studies that have implicated the role of gut microbiota in the pathogenesis and treatment response of IBS, as well as the therapeutic mechanisms of dietary interventions. However, there is significant heterogeneity among the studies and no uniform characteristics of IBS-related gut microbiota.

Novel GPR43 Agonists Exert an Anti-Inflammatory Effect in a Colitis Model

Bi-Oh Park et al.

Summary: GPR43, a metabolite-sensing receptor stimulated by short-chain fatty acids, plays a role in immunity and metabolism, with potential anti-inflammatory effects. Novel synthetic agonists can modulate its activity and downregulate NF-kappa B, showing promise as therapeutic drugs.

Characterization of short-chain fatty acids in patients with ulcerative colitis: a meta-analysis

Hao-Ming Xu et al.

Summary: Studies investigating the changes in short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) in patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) have yielded inconsistent results. This meta-analysis found that UC patients had significantly decreased concentrations of total SCFAs, acetate, propionate, and valerate compared with healthy subjects. In addition, certain SCFAs showed inconsistent changes in UC patients with different disease status.

Disruption of the pro-inflammatory, anti-inflammatory cytokines and tight junction proteins expression, associated with changes of the composition of the gut microbiota in patients with irritable bowel syndrome

V. Ivashkin et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the changes in gut microbiome composition, tight junction proteins, and cytokines expression from the duodenum to the distal part of the colon in IBS patients and healthy volunteers. The results showed significantly increased expression of IL-2 and TNF-alpha in IBS patients, with decreased expression of IL-10, CLD-3, and CLD-5, as well as altered ratios of Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes in the gut microbiota of IBS patients compared to controls.
