Field measurement and numerical simulation of the relationship between the vertical wind environment and building morphology in residential areas in Xi'an, China

Wei Feng et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the impact of building morphology on ventilation efficiency in urban residential areas and establishes a predictive model using UAV and simulation methods. The research findings suggest that the height fall morphological index has the greatest impact on the wind speed ratio (WSR) at different heights.

A review of multi-scale modelling, assessment, and improvement methods of the urban thermal and wind environment

Sihong Du et al.

Summary: The urban thermal and wind environment (UTWE) is an important consideration in urban planning design, but there is a lack of method specifications and comprehensive study reviews, leading to unclear steps in assessment and improvement. The review found that scale is considered in modelling and improvement studies, but not in assessments. Contradictory conclusions were found in improvement studies, and current assessments do not directly guide the selection of improvement strategies.

Superblock transformation in Seoul Megacity: Effects of block densification on urban ventilation patterns

Minjung Maing

Summary: The superblock urban planning model, in response to rapid urbanization, has been investigated in Seoul's Gangnam District. The study found that areas within the superblocks lacking open space experience poor ventilation. Densification along the perimeter and the inner grid discontinuous streets worsened ventilation, while wider through roads and ground-level open space improved ventilation.

On the effects of urban-like intersections on ventilation and pollutant dispersion

Xin Guo et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the airflow and pollutant dispersion within urban intersections through CFD simulations, finding that the ventilation efficiency is significantly impacted by intersection type, wind direction, and number of branches. Three-way intersections have better ventilation efficiency, with wind direction having a greater influence on three-way and four-way intersections compared to roundabouts.

A novel geometric parameter to evaluate the effects of block form on solar radiation towards sustainable urban design

Jingjin Li et al.

Summary: This paper studies the relationship between urban block geometry and solar radiation in Nanjing. The study finds that besides density, block form also significantly affects solar radiation on buildings and surrounding open spaces. Block surface ratios are the most influential geometric parameters for solar radiation on buildings, while open spaces are more affected by sky view factor. The seasonal effect on solar radiation has a much greater impact on open spaces than on buildings.

Effects of Land Use on Land Surface Temperature: A Case Study of Wuhan, China

Youpeng Lu et al.

Summary: This study aimed to understand the impact of land use on the urban heat island effect in Wuhan, China. Findings suggest that the percentage of industrial areas significantly influences land surface temperatures, while the urban heat environment of commercial areas is determined by surrounding land use factors. Mitigating the UHI effect in industrial and commercial areas can be achieved by careful urban planning.
