Mitochondrial Dysfunction in Arsenic-Induced Hepatotoxicity: Pathogenic and Therapeutic Implications

Chandra Prakash et al.

Summary: Mitochondria, as essential cellular organelles associated with energy production and signaling pathways, are targeted by environmental pollutants such as arsenic. Arsenic, a toxic metalloid contaminant of drinking water, is particularly toxic to cellular organs like the liver, primarily affecting mitochondrial function and integrity. Research suggests that arsenic induces oxidative stress and alters signaling pathways within cells, emphasizing the importance of understanding mechanistic aspects of mitochondrial dysfunction in arsenic-induced hepatotoxicity.

Effects of hybrid nanoparticle additives in n-butanol/waste plastic oil/diesel blends on combustion, particulate and gaseous emissions from diesel engine evaluated with entropy-weighted PROMETHEE II and TOPSIS: Environmental and health risks of plastic waste

Abdulfatah Abdu Yusuf et al.

Summary: Due to the limited use of plastic waste recycling, a large amount of plastic waste is buried or ends up in the ocean. This study investigates the effects of waste plastic pyrolysis oil, n-butanol, hybrid nanoparticles, and diesel fuel blends on combustion, emissions, and particulates from a diesel engine. The results show that the blend fuels can significantly reduce n-alkane emissions and the content of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in particulates, but their effects on carbon monoxide (CO) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions are uncertain.

Different mechanisms of arsenic related signaling in cellular proliferation, apoptosis and neo-plastic transformation

Nandita Medda et al.

Summary: Arsenic, a toxic heavy metal, is associated with various health issues and used in chemotherapy for acute promyelocytic leukemia. The balance between cellular proliferation and apoptosis influences arsenic's transformation rate. Arsenic toxicity is propagated via ROS-induced stress and signaling pathways impacting cellular outcomes.

Summary: Arsenic, a common environmental contaminant, can lead to various health issues including skin diseases, carcinogenesis, and neurological diseases. It is also associated with non-communicable diseases such as diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular diseases, with the mechanisms involving pancreatic beta-cell dysfunction, insulin resistance, and oxidative stress. More research is needed to identify suitable therapeutic targets for managing arsenic-induced health problems.

Application of the in vivo oxidative stress reporter Hmox1 as mechanistic biomarker of arsenic toxicity

Francisco Inesta-Vaquera et al.

Summary: Inorganic arsenic (iAs) is a naturally occurring metalloid that poses a global health risk, with links to various diseases including cognitive impairment, cardiovascular failure, and cancer. Despite laboratory studies on iAs toxicity mechanisms, the lack of reliable in vivo biomarkers has hindered comprehensive analysis of its effects. The use of stress reporter models, such as the HOTT reporter mice, shows promise in serving as surrogate biomarkers for iAs-induced oxidative stress and could aid in the development of treatments to combat arsenicosis.

Connections between endoplasmic reticulum stress-associated unfolded protein response, mitochondria, and autophagy in arsenic-induced carcinogenesis

Priya Wadgaonkar et al.

Summary: Arsenic exposure through contaminated drinking water is a global health issue affecting over 200 million people worldwide, leading to various cancers. Research has shifted focus from genetic mutations to epigenetics, metabolism, and endoplasmic reticulum stress in cancer development. Arsenic induces cellular stress through oxidative damage, epigenetic changes, and impairment of DNA repair systems, highlighting the importance of understanding the role of ER stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, and autophagy in cancer prevention and treatment.

Toxic Mechanisms of Five Heavy Metals: Mercury, Lead, Chromium, Cadmium, and Arsenic

Mahdi Balali-Mood et al.

Summary: Industrial activities of the last century have led to increased human exposure to heavy metals such as mercury, lead, chromium, cadmium, and arsenic, resulting in acute or chronic poisonings through water, air, and food. These heavy metals accumulate in the body, causing toxic effects on various tissues and organs by disrupting cellular events and inducing oxidative stress. Common mechanisms of action of these metals include ROS generation, inhibition of antioxidant defense, enzyme inactivation, and selective binding to specific macromolecules, some leading to genomic instability and carcinogenicity through DNA damage and oxidative stress. Despite current knowledge, heavy metal poisoning incidents remain prevalent, necessitating preventive measures and effective treatment, possibly including chelation therapy.
