The Neptunian gravity estimated from the motion of Triton based on astrometric observations

Bo Wang et al.

Summary: This study updates the orbital and dynamical model of Triton using astrometric data from 1847 to 2020, and estimates the gravity parameters of Neptune. The new model fits well with the observations and has implications for future deep space exploration missions and solar system dynamics studies.

A dense ring of the trans-Neptunian object Quaoar outside its Roche limit

B. E. Morgado et al.

Summary: This study reports the discovery of an inhomogeneous ring around the trans-Neptunian body Quaoar. The detected ring orbits at a distance well outside Quaoar's classical Roche limit, suggesting that this limit does not always determine ring survival. Elastic collisions, based on laboratory experiments, are found to play a role in maintaining the ring far away from the body. The proximity of Quaoar's ring to a 1/3 spin-orbit resonance indicates the importance of this resonance in ring confinement for small bodies.

The multichord stellar occultation by the centaur Bienor on January 11, 2019

E. Fernandez-Valenzuela et al.

Summary: As part of our program studying the physical properties of trans-Neptunian objects and centaurs, we successfully predicted and observed a stellar occultation by the centaur (54598) Bienor on January 11, 2019. Through our observations, we determined a diameter for Bienor and discovered irregularities in its rotational light curve. We presented different scenarios to explain the inconsistencies between the occultation and photometric results, and suggested the possibility of undiscovered rings.

Constraints on the structure and seasonal variations of Triton's atmosphere from the 5 October 2017 stellar occultation and previous observations

J. Marques Oliveira et al.

Summary: This study investigated the atmospheric structure and seasonal variations of Triton, Neptune's main satellite, through the observation and analysis of a stellar occultation event. The results suggest that there is a seasonal variation in Triton's atmospheric pressure, and the pressure observed in 2017 is consistent with the extrapolation from 1989 data. However, the reported increase in surface pressure during the 1990s remains controversial.

Volatile transport modeling on Triton with new observational constraints

T. Bertrand et al.

Summary: The moon Triton shares many similarities with Pluto in terms of volatile cycles, serving as a benchmark case for the study of surface-atmosphere interactions on Kuiper Belt objects rich in volatiles. The simulations show that Triton's poles act as cold traps for volatile ices, favoring the formation of polar caps extending to lower latitudes through glacial flow or the formation of thinner seasonal deposits.

SORA: Stellar occultation reduction and analysis

A. R. Gomes-Junior et al.

Summary: The stellar occultation technique provides accurate data for determining the sizes, shapes, and positions of occulting bodies. As observation methods and technology improve, stellar occultation observations are becoming more common. We have developed an open-source Python library, sora, for efficient processing and analysis of stellar occultation data.

Assessment of the feasibility of space-based stellar occultation observations of Uranus and Neptune

William R. Saunders et al.

Summary: Observing stellar occultations from satellites in low-Earth orbit can provide high-quality upper atmospheric measurements of Uranus and Neptune. Such observations can fill in the significant gap in understanding the heating of their upper atmospheres and assist in planning for future flagship missions to these ice giants.

Haze in Pluto's atmosphere: Results from SOFIA and ground-based observations of the 2015 June 29 Pluto occultation

Michael J. Person et al.

Summary: On 29 June 2015, the occultation by Pluto of a bright star was observed from multiple ground-based stations and the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA). Analysis of the data shows that there has been no significant expansion or contraction of Pluto's middle atmosphere, and a haze component is required to reproduce the observed light curves, affecting the understanding of the atmosphere's photochemistry.

Gaia Early Data Release 3 Acceleration of the Solar System from Gaia astrometry

S. A. Klioner et al.

Summary: Gaia EDR3 provides accurate astrometry for QSO-like extragalactic sources, allowing for the measurement of the acceleration of the solar system barycentre with respect to the Universe. The estimated acceleration is in good agreement with current models of the Galactic gravitational potential. Future Gaia data releases are expected to provide acceleration estimates with uncertainties below 0.1 mu as yr(-1).

Science Goals and Mission Objectives for the Future Exploration of Ice Giants Systems: A Horizon 2061 Perspective

Michel Blanc et al.

Summary: The comparative study of planetary systems can provide new scientific insights and help us understand the diversity and origins of planets, as well as search for habitable worlds and alien life. However, the lack of knowledge on the ice giant systems of Uranus and Neptune in our solar system limits the applicability of this approach. Developing a long-term plan for the exploration of these systems can address key scientific questions and potentially lead to the search for life on promising moons.

B. E. Morgado et al.

Summary: This study characterizes the ring system of Chariklo, confirming the presence of W-shaped structures within the rings and variation in radial width. The data suggest an eccentricity of the rings and allow for a more accurate determination of Chariklo's shape and size. Additionally, precise astrometric positions of Chariklo were obtained using Gaia EDR3 data.

The Science Case for Spacecraft Exploration of the Uranian Satellites: Candidate Ocean Worlds in an Ice Giant System

Richard J. J. Cartwright et al.

Summary: The 27 satellites of Uranus are still largely a mystery, with limited observations of their surface properties. Evidence suggests that the five largest classical moons of Uranus may be ocean worlds with liquid subsurface layers. Further close-up observations and measurements by a Uranus orbiter will be needed to investigate these moons and the planet's other satellites.
