Droplet size from Venturi air induction spray nozzles

R. Sijs et al.

Summary: Sprays play a significant role in various applications, where the size of droplets is a crucial factor. In agriculture, flat fan spray nozzles are commonly combined with a Venturi component to generate larger droplets and prevent unintentional spray drift. It is commonly believed that the larger droplets are a result of easier breakup of the liquid sheet due to pre-existing air bubbles. However, this study shows that droplet size in Venturi nozzles is determined by both the nozzle's orifice area and the additional pressure drop in the Venturi chamber, with the latter being responsible for the increased droplet size compared to conventional nozzles.
