Thermophysical Properties of Mixtures of 2-Ethylhexanoic Acid and Ethanol

Babette Kunstmann et al.

Summary: In this study, the thermophysical properties of mixtures of 2-ethylhexanoic acid (EHA) and ethanol were measured, including density, viscosity, thermal conductivity, isobaric heat capacity, and self-diffusion coefficients. The isobaric vapor-liquid equilibria were also measured. Empirical models were developed based on the measured data for use in spray flame synthesis process simulations and related applications.

Microexplosions of multicomponent drops in spray flames

M. F. B. Stodt et al.

Summary: This study investigates the occurrence of in-flight droplet microexplosions (mu-explosions) during flame spray pyrolysis and confirms the findings through single drop experiments. It is found that there are distinct mu-explosions happening at high frequencies during the synthesis of iron oxide nanoparticles. This finding is significant for understanding the role and relevance of mu-explosions in the production and formulation of functional nanoparticles.

Visualization and image analysis of droplet puffing and micro-explosion in spray-flame synthesis of iron oxide nanoparticles

N. Juengst et al.

Summary: This study investigates the disruption of droplets in spray-flame synthesis of metal oxides using high spatiotemporal resolution imaging. It is found that the mixture of solvent and precursor leads to the presence of disrupting droplets in addition to regular droplets. Disruptions are classified into puffing and micro-explosion, with puffing occurring more frequently. Disrupting droplets have a smaller diameter than regular droplets, indicating the benefits of disruptions for rapid spray evaporation.

Puffing/micro-explosion in composite multi-component droplets

S. S. Sazhin et al.

Summary: A new simple model is proposed for the puffing and micro-explosion of composite multi-component water/liquid fuel droplets. The model takes into account the effects of droplet thermal swelling and uses analytical methods to analyze droplet heating and evaporation. The results show that the model can reasonably predict the times of puffing and micro-explosion, which are influenced by ambient gas temperatures and initial droplet radii. Furthermore, considering the presence of multiple components in the fuel leads to longer times to puffing and micro-explosion.

Phase-selective laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy in flame spray pyrolysis for iron oxide nanoparticle synthesis

Malte F. B. Stodt et al.

Summary: This study investigates the flame spray pyrolysis of iron oxide nanoparticles using the new reference nozzle SpraySyn and applies the PS-LIBS technique to study particle formation under different precursor solutions. Significant differences in atomic emission spectra are observed when adding 2-ethylhexanoic acid to precursors, enabling differentiation between different particle formation routes. The experimental results provide deep insights into combustion and particle nucleation kinetics in spray flames, with potential applications for numerical simulations.

Macroscopic and microscopic spray structure of water-in-diesel emulsions

Mhadi A. Ismael et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the spray characteristics of water-in-diesel emulsion, finding that the emulsified fuel has a wider spray angle and is prone to droplet puffing/microexplosion, resulting in more severe droplet deformation. As the water content increases, the average diameter of the droplets also increases, indicating that the spray droplets may undergo puffing/micro-explosion in a short period of time.

Influence of angled dispersion gas on coaxial atomization, spray and flame formation in the context of spray-flame synthesis of nanoparticles

M. Bieber et al.

Summary: The study reveals the crucial relationship between spray formation and flame stability through experimental investigations and analysis. Altering nozzle geometry can enhance the interaction between spray and flame, thus affecting particle synthesis and output. Comparison of timescales of spray density and flame fluctuations shows that the presence of dispersion gas can impact the ignition process.
