Increased microbial and substrate complexity result in higher molecular diversity of the dissolved organic matter pool

Qi Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of different complex substrates on the production of DOM by microbial communities. The results showed that microbial complexity plays a more important role in shaping the molecular composition of DOM than the substrate itself. Additionally, the composition of DOM has a larger influence on microbial compositions compared to the concentrations of DOM and inorganic nutrients.

Full-Scale Manipulation of the Empty Bed Contact Time to Optimize Dissolved Organic Matter Removal by Drinking Water Biofilters

Nashita Moona et al.

Summary: The study found that the empty bed contact time of biofilters has a significant impact on the efficiency of dissolved organic matter removal, especially for certain organic matter fractions. Longer contact times can advantage the operation of some biological filters, particularly those placed before barriers that are sensitive to biofouling.
