Assessment of a wide array of organic micropollutants of emerging concern in wastewater treatment plants in Greece: Occurrence, removals, mass loading and potential risks

Anna Ofrydopoulou et al.

Summary: This study presents the contamination profile of multi-class emerging contaminants in two wastewater treatment plants in the region of Thessaloniki, Greece, highlighting higher influent concentrations compared to effluent, interesting trends for illicit drugs, and ecotoxicological risk assessment. The findings underscore the need to intensify surveillance programs for receiving water bodies and investigate toxicity to non-target organisms.

Removal of Pharmaceuticals in a Macrophyte Pond-Constructed Wetland System and the Effect of a Low Effluent Recirculation

Rayco Guedes-Alonso et al.

Summary: Waste stabilization ponds and constructed wetlands are an effective method for removing pharmaceutical residues, but their efficiency is not always complete. This study evaluated the presence of pharmaceuticals in wastewater, their removal in a macrophyte pond-CW system, and the impact of effluent recirculation on removal and ecological risk.

Soil and Water Management Factors That Affect Plant Uptake of Pharmaceuticals: A Case Study

Vanessa Mendoza-Grimon et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effects of water management and plant rhizosphere on the uptake of pharmaceutical compounds by crops. The results showed that the described water reuse methodology poses a negligible risk to consumers.

Occurrence and removal of chemicals of emerging concern in wastewater treatment plants and their impact on receiving water systems

Oksana Golovko et al.

Summary: Wastewater treatment plants are major sources of Emerging Chemicals of Concern (CECs) in aquatic environments, impacting aquatic ecosystems. This study investigated 164 CECs at 15 locations, with CEC concentrations varying widely between WWTPs. The K-d of CECs correlated with K-ow, allowing for prediction of their distribution in water and solids. WWTP effluent had higher CEC concentrations than upstream waters, potentially impacting downstream ecosystems.
