Significance of silicate liquid immiscibility for the origin of young highly evolved lithic clasts in Chang'E-5 regolith

Jing Yang et al.

Summary: Highly evolved lithology on the Moon, which record the extensive differentiation processes of lunar magmas, is sparsely distributed. Silicic lithologies detected in the nearside Procellarum KREEP Terrane (PKT) have a cratering model age as young as -2.5 Ga. The detailed study of highly evolved lithic clasts returned by the Chang'E-5 mission reveals two different types and suggests the formation mechanisms of these young silicic magmatism. Scoring: 8/10.

Giant impacts and the origin and evolution of continents

Summary: This study investigates the formation of the Pilbara Craton in Western Australia using the oxygen isotope compositions of magmatic zircons. The results reveal that the craton was built in three stages, with the first stage being characterized by shallow melting and hydrothermal alteration due to giant impacts. The second stage involved the crystallization of zircons from parental magmas near the base of the evolving continental nucleus, while the third stage indicates the efficient recycling of supracrustal rocks. The timing of the formation of the oldest felsic rocks coincides with the end of the late heavy bombardment period.

Early silicic magmatism on a differentiated asteroid Robert

Summary: Using geochemical analyses, researchers have discovered a unique andesitic meteorite that has a different origin from other known andesitic meteorites, as well as Earth's continental crust. The study also suggests that this meteorite likely formed during the early history of the Solar System, with extensive andesitic magma differentiation occurring during this time, and the formation of andesitic crust not necessarily requiring plate tectonics.
