Natural and synthetic estrogenic compounds in the Pearl River Estuary and northern shelf of the South China Sea

Carina Deich et al.

Summary: Endocrine disrupting compounds, including both synthetic and natural substances, can interact with the hormone system of organisms and potentially stress aquatic ecosystems. This study investigated the presence of estrogens and estrogen-like substances in the Pearl River Estuary and adjacent northern shelf of the South China Sea. The highest concentrations observed were 3.6 ng/L for estrone (E1), 0.7 ng/L for 17 alpha-ethinylestradiol (EE2), 12.9 ng/L for genistein (GEN), 11.9 ng/L for daidzein (DAI), and 1.9 ng/L for zearalenone (ZEN). Estrogenic activity was detected in freshwater samples, but not in saltwater samples.

Steroid hormones in wastewater: Sources, treatments, environmental risks, and regulations

Balqees Almazrouei et al.

Summary: Steroid hormones as micropollutants pose a significant threat to human health and the environment worldwide, even at low concentrations. They are widely investigated as common endocrine disruptors due to their extensive use in hormonal treatments and natural secretions. The main sources of steroid hormones in the environment include human and livestock excretion, veterinary medicines, agricultural runoff, and pharmaceuticals.

Occurrence, fate and ecological risks of 90 typical emerging contaminants in full-scale textile wastewater treatment plants from a large industrial park in Guangxi, Southwest China

Si -Si Liu et al.

Summary: The occurrence, fate, removal, and ecological risks of various emerging contaminants (ECs) were investigated in two textile wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in a large textile industrial park in Southwest China. A total of 50 ECs were identified, with phthalate esters (PAEs), endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) being the most dominant. The WWTPs effectively removed 63-69% of the detected ECs, with removal efficiencies exceeding 80%. Fenton processing showed enhanced removal efficiencies for long-chain PFAS. The PAEs and EDCs posed medium-to-high risks to aquatic organisms and were identified as priority ECs.

Interferences in the yeast estrogen screen (YES) assay for evaluation of estrogenicity in environmental samples, chemical mixtures, and individual substances

Giselle Gomes et al.

Summary: The Yeast Estrogen Screen (YES) is commonly used to estimate the estrogenic potential of environmental samples. In this study, we investigated the experimental parameters of the assay and applied it to different substances and matrices. We found that cell density and incubation time affect the assay sensitivity, and the particulate phase is important for estrogenic activity. The integration of estrogenic and antiestrogenic endpoints provides deeper insights into the potential risk associated with EDC.

Extensive simulations assess the performance of genome-wide association mapping in various Saccharomyces cerevisiae subpopulations

Jackson Peter et al.

Summary: With the development of high throughput sequencing technologies, genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have become a powerful tool for analyzing the genetic origins of phenotypic variation. This study evaluated the feasibility and limitations of GWAS by sequencing the genomes of 1011 Saccharomyces cerevisiae isolates. The results showed that population structure is not a major issue when the sample size is large enough. While the genetic determinant of Mendelian traits is easily mapped, there are discrepancies in GWAS for complex traits in terms of detection, false positive, and false negative rates.

Arsenic through aquatic trophic levels: effects, transformations and biomagnification-a concise review

Devanita Ghosh et al.

Summary: This review discusses the occurrence of arsenic (As) in various aquatic habitats and the direct or indirect effects on different organisms, including bacteria, algae, phytoplankton, zooplankton, and higher trophic levels. Special emphasis is given to finfishes and shellfishes that are commonly consumed by humans. The review also provides an overview of commonly used detection methods for As and highlights the importance of using As metabolites as an indicator of human exposure. Furthermore, the integration of 'omics' approaches and advanced sequencing technologies is emphasized for global monitoring of the human gut microbiome and understanding the effects and consequences of As bioaccumulation.

Summary: This study evaluated the levels of endocrine disruptor chemicals (EDCs) in water and sediment samples from the estuaries of Tagus and Douro Rivers. The results showed that pesticide residues and bisphenols were more contaminated in the Tagus estuary, while polycyclic musks and UV-filters had lower levels of contamination in both estuaries.

Summary: An analytical method for determining six estrogens and estrogen mimics in the natural environment has been developed and validated. The method, using SPE-LC-MS/MS, showed satisfactory recoveries, precision, and linearity, with LODs ranging from 2.5 to 19.2 ng/L. Matrix effects were observed in surface water and wastewater, with organic pollutants negatively affecting the method sensitivity. The total concentrations of target estrogenic compounds in environmental samples ranged from 17 to 9462 ng/L.

Simultaneous measurement of free and conjugated estrogens in surface water using capillary liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry

Fan Huang et al.

Summary: In this study, a modified derivatisation-based methodology combined with liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry was successfully applied for the simultaneous determination of estrogens in environmental samples, including various isomers. Optimization of solid phase extraction and enhancement of mass spectrometric signal led to satisfactory recovery and good linearity, demonstrating the repeatability and sensitivity of the method. The established methodology was effectively used to analyze the concentration of estrogens in natural water samples, with three free estrogens and two sulphate estrogens being detected above their method quantification limits.
