ASRA pain medicine consensus guidelines on the management of the perioperative patient on cannabis and cannabinoids

Shalini Shah et al.

Summary: The American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine formed a Cannabis Working Group to develop guidelines for the perioperative use of cannabis. The committee successfully created specific clinical recommendations using a modified Delphi method, achieving 100% consensus on nine key questions. The recommendations addressed perioperative screening, postponement of elective surgery, concomitant use of opioid and cannabis perioperatively, implications for parturients, adjustment in anesthetic and analgesics intraoperatively, postoperative monitoring, cannabis use disorder, and postoperative concerns. Surgical patients using cannabinoids are at potential increased risk for negative perioperative outcomes. Rating: 8/10.

Cannabis: a multifaceted plant with endless potentials

Eric Fordjour et al.

Summary: Cannabis sativa is a versatile plant with various uses in medicine, agriculture, food, and cosmetics. It contains numerous chemical compounds, including cannabinoids and non-cannabinoids. The main active component is a cannabinoid, mostly found in the flowers, with terpenes forming the largest composition in the plant. The plant's pharmacological evidence suggests potential as antioxidants, antibacterial agents, anticancer agents, and anti-inflammatory agents, with reported applications in the food and cosmetic industries.

Pharmacokinetic Profile of Δ9-Tetrahydrocannabinol, Cannabidiol, and Metabolites in Blood Following Vaporization and Oral Ingestion of Cannabidiol Products.

Cecilia L. Bergeria et al.

Summary: Limited data is available on the pharmacokinetics of cannabidiol (CBD) in different formulations. This study compared the pharmacokinetic profiles of CBD, Delta 9-tetrahydrocannabinol (9-THC), and related metabolites in blood and oral fluid after participants took 100mg of CBD in oral and vaporized forms. The results showed that oral and vaporized formulations produce significant variability in the pharmacokinetics of CBD, and CBD alone is unlikely to convert to Delta 9-THC or produce positive drug tests for Delta 9-THC or its metabolite.

Long-term electronic cigarette exposure induces cardiovascular dysfunction similar to tobacco cigarettes: role of nicotine and exposure duration

Mohamed A. El-Mahdy et al.

Summary: A chronic mouse exposure model that mimics human e-cigarette vaping was developed and utilized for longitudinal studies of alterations in cardiovascular function. The study found that long-term vaping can induce cardiovascular diseases similar to smoking, with severity increasing with exposure duration and nicotine content.

Medical Cannabis State and Federal Regulations: Implications for United States Health Care Entities

Adam I. Perlman et al.

Summary: There are discrepancies between state and federal laws regarding cannabis use in the United States, posing challenges for patients, healthcare providers, and institutions. The lack of clarity on policies related to medical marijuana usage, prescription, possession, education, and research creates challenges for healthcare stakeholders across the country. Better defining evidence-based, legally compliant MMJ policies and regulations in healthcare settings is necessary to address the needs of both patients and providers.

Cannabis and Lung Health: Does the Bad Outweigh the Good?

Alan G. Kaplan

Summary: The use of cannabis is increasing, with various medical indications and approval for recreational use in many countries. However, respiratory complications such as lung function changes, lung destruction, and increased risk of cancer are associated with cannabis use, particularly when smoked. Reports suggest that orally administering cannabis may be the safest for lung health.
