High-Power Factor Enabled by Efficient Manipulation Interaxial Angle for Enhancing Thermoelectrics of GeTe-Cu2Te Alloys

Xiaobo Tan et al.

Summary: By synergistically manipulating lattice distortion and vacancy concentration, excellent electrical transport properties of GeTe-Cu2Te alloys were promoted, and the interaxial angle-dependent density of state effective mass was quantified. The effective band modulation of Zr on GeTe-based materials was demonstrated, enhancing the band convergence effect and improving the Seebeck coefficient. Ge-compensation attenuated the mobility deterioration, leading to improved power factor, and low lattice thermal conductivity was achieved due to strong phonon scattering from Zr/Ge substitutional defects. The highest figure of merit zT of -1.6 (at 650 K) and average zTave of -0.9 (300-750 K) were obtained in (Ge1.01Zr0.02Te)0.985(Cu2Te)0.015 alloy.

Entropy engineering enhances the thermoelectric performance and microhardness of (GeTe)1-x(AgSb0.5Bi0.5Te2)x

Jinxuan Zhong et al.

Summary: As an emerging fingerprint factor in the material genome, entropy plays a vital role in enhancing the thermoelectric performance of multicomponent materials. The lattice thermal conductivity can be reduced, and the Seebeck coefficient can be improved through severe lattice distortion and crystal symmetry enhancement. However, high entropy hinders the improvement of carrier mobility, which is crucial for enhancing the dimensionless figure of merit (zT).

Strong charge carrier scattering at grain boundaries of PbTe caused by the collapse of metavalent bonding

Riga Wu et al.

Summary: Grain boundaries (GBs) are important for controlling mass, heat, and charge transport. The scattering of charge carriers at GBs is found to depend on the misorientation angle, with low-angle GBs experiencing disruption of metavalent bonding (MVB) at dislocation cores and high-angle GBs completely destroying MVB due to Peierls distortion. The collapse of MVB leads to an enlargement of the GB barrier height, affecting charge transport.

Enhanced Thermoelectric Performance in GeTe by Synergy of Midgap state and Band Convergence

Zhe Guo et al.

Summary: The coexistence of midgap state and valence band degeneracy in Bi-alloyed GeTe through In-Cd codoping can modify the valence band structure. Doping induces a midgap state and improves the Seebeck coefficient near room temperature, while Cd doping increases the Seebeck coefficient in the mid-high temperature range by promoting valence band convergence. The synergistic effects enhance the density of state effective mass and yield excellent thermoelectric properties for the Ge0.89Bi0.06In0.01Cd0.04Te sample.

Metavalent Bonding Origins of Unusual Properties of Group IV Chalcogenides

Raagya Arora et al.

Summary: A theoretical analysis has demonstrated that weakly broken symmetry of parent simple-cubic crystals of Group V metalloids leads to the emergence of metavalent bonding (MVB) in rocksalt chalcogenides. MVB mediates strong coupling between conduction and valence bands, making the crystals highly polarizable, conductive, and sensitive to bond-lengths. However, stronger symmetry-breaking transforms them discontinuously into covalent and ionic semiconducting states.

Revisiting the Nature of Chemical Bonding in Chalcogenides to Explain and Design their Properties

Matthias Wuttig et al.

Summary: This article reviews the utilization of quantum chemical bonding descriptors in designing materials with tailored properties and their application in quantitatively describing bonding and its transition in chalcogenides. These descriptors can also predict material properties, including optical and transport properties. They can be used to tailor the properties of chalcogenides relevant for thermoelectrics, photovoltaics, and phase-change memories. The article also discusses a class of materials characterized by unconventional properties attributed to a novel bonding mechanism called metavalent. Promising research directions exploring property changes upon changing bonding mechanism and extending the concept of quantum chemical property predictors to more complex compounds are outlined in the conclusion.

Atom Probe Tomography Advances Chalcogenide Phase-Change and Thermoelectric Materials

Yuan Yu et al.

Summary: Main-group chalcogenides exhibit excellent performance in phase-change data storage and thermoelectric energy conversion applications. The metavalent bonding mechanism plays a crucial role in meeting the different property requirements. Atom probe tomography (APT) can distinguish metavalent bonding from other bonding mechanisms by examining bond-breaking behavior. A high probability of multiple events (PME) is observed in metavalently bonded crystalline phase-change and thermoelectric materials, while lower PME values are found in amorphous phase-change materials and poor thermoelectrics. APT also allows for the investigation of structural defects on a subnanometer scale, revealing interdiffusion of elements and the influence of defects on thermoelectric properties. This review highlights the power of APT as a technique for the design of phase-change and thermoelectric materials.
